BOISE, Idaho — Idaho is hoping to capitalize on more than just the milk emerging from its cows.

The state's mountains of manure are fueling dreams of pipelines linking waste treatment facilities at dairies large and small to central refineries that produce natural gas pure enough for homes or cars.

State energy czar Paul Kjellander, who heads up Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's Office of Energy Resources, is pushing a package

If this is a good idea, the market would pay for it. I am suspicious when the government gets involved with subsidies and all the rest of it.

Cow manure is also an excellent fertilizer. So the question is, which is the better use? The best way to establish that, normally, is to let the market decide.

Our local power cooperative here in Vermont has set up several power generators at a nearby landfill, where buried organic waste breaks down and produces methane. This is actually now their cheapest source of power. Ergo, it’s a good idea, because it’s taking stuff that no one was using and making efficient use of it. But I doubt whether methane production is the most efficient use of cow manure, which is liquid gold for farmers.

There needs to be a “no open flame” placard on that cow. One lit match and that heifer might pull a Hindenburg.
