$27-Million UAW-Owned Country Club Includes Golf Course, Condos, Swimming Pools Monday, December 22, 2008 By Matt Cover
(CNSNews.com) – The United Autoworkers Union, which had a total net worth of $1.2 billion in 2007, owns a $27 million resort and conference center that features a $6 million upscale golf course, according to financial statements on file with the U.S. Department of Labor.
The retreat, called the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center, is located on Black Lake in Onaway, Mich. The union-owned retreat includes the Black Lake Golf Club, valued at $6 million according to the financial statement.
The resort features conference centers, classrooms, resort amenities and the golf club, which is open to union members, retirees and their guests, as well as the public, on a space-available basis.
Accommodations at the resort cost $92 a night for a single room and $106 a night for a double. Full-service condos are available costing $180 for a two-bedroom and $275 for a three-bedroom unit.
UAW members receive a slight discount on accommodations, paying $74 a night for a single, $87 a night for a double. Members can rent a two-bedroom condo for $150/night and a three-bedroom condo for $225/night.
The Education Center includes lakeside rooms, hotel-style rooms, as well as a fully-equipped campground, boat ramp and dock. It also has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, two full-length basketball courts, and a sauna.
The 1,000 acre golf club is a first-class, 1,000 acre, environmentally conscious course designed by Rees Jones, son of famed golf course designer Robert Trent Jones, the same designer behind PGA-level courses Pinehurst, Torrey Pines, and LPGA International.

I knew Ole Walt was a German socialist and radical. Of course Henry Ford was nuts too but at least he built a useful product, unlike Reuther.
Do not worry about labor union country clubs. My Dad, a rank-and-file union member did not have a prayer's chance of using, or even knowing that the union had such a place! The club was for the exclusive use of the union bosses, their friends, and VIPs (elected officials, families, and friends). Never mind the fact that the union dues of my father and countless other rank-and-file members paid for the facility as well as the campaigns of the leftist Democrats.
Of course you will be told (and shown) that the club is open to anyone with the money to pay for the drinks and facility use.

Reuther and his wife were killed in the crash of a (chartered) private jet as they flew to Black Lake.
The parasite killed its host and should be celebrating. It took 30 yrs for the Left to accomplish it but they finally did it.

I’m not surprised about this. The UAW leadership only cares about themselves. As long as that money keeps coming in, they don’t care one bit about the workers.

The club opened in 2000. It wasn’t a secret. I’m not a union member, but am an avid golfer. I am a hard-working, unconnected nobody and I have played the course 3 times. If your dad had no chance of knowing about it, than he ought to make a habit of reading. And while we are at it, you ought to read a little deeper.
Anyone can play this course. It is easier to access than Bethpage State Park. I paid about $85 to play it in early September. UAW members DO get a break on the rates, but that’s about as far as it goes. Frankly, I think it is one of the nicest courses I have ever played...and for the money it was a steal. Your old man should be mad that they don’t charge more.
When the course was built Northern Michigan was in the midst of a golf development boom. At the time, development of a premium golf course would drive surrounding property values up exponentially. Real estate was where large money was being made. A golf course was the best way to create value out of a property that is otherwise too far off the beaten path to be worth much $.
There is no reason the Union should pay hard-earned dues to have something that loses money, but if they developed something that can turn a profit and benefit their membership, more power to them.
