SFPD Chief Fong's exit comes at crucial time
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/21/8 | Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross

Posted on 12/21/2008 9:03:11 AM PST by SmithL

San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong's decision to retire after nearly five stable but uninspired years on the job, comes just as Mayor Gavin Newsom is facing two tough political challenges with the city's powerful police officers union: budget cuts and the need for the union's backing for his 2010 gubernatorial bid.

Faced with a staggering city budget deficit, Newsom has asked the Police Officers Association to give back the 6 percent raise he agreed to in the last contract - just as he is asking other unions for givebacks.

So far, the police rank and file have said no dice.

At the same time Newsom is in the middle of an exploratory run for governor and is also looking for the police union's endorsement in order to shore up his law-and-order credentials.

The union, however, has a long and deep relationship with state Attorney General Jerry Brown, who also is running for governor.

And police union leaders - who have been dealing with crashing morale among rank-and-file cops over Fong's lack of leadership - have made no secret of their unhappiness with the chief.

Whatever the case, the mayor and the chief have been talking about a change for the past month.

Now it's official.

I worked for a large west coast police department for seven years. Our union always recommended and endorsed democrats. Myself and almost all of my fellow officers ignored them of course and voted for conservatives.

LOL. A police union being courted by either Newsome or Brown? I bet that really pleases “real” police officers. Most policemen I have worked with and know personally are decent conservatives. Their bosses on the other hand follow the Democrat line. Sad.

“decision to retire after nearly five stable but uninspired years on the job”

Stable?

The Chronicle then speaks of a lack of leadership, contradicting its first statement. I guess an unqualified, Affirmative Action hire of a minority female isn’t always the best choice for fighting crime, despite the Liberal utopian thought process of the appeasing Marxists who prefer murder and mayhem to interjecting “diversity” in areas that require attention like the Mission (Latino gangs, including MS-13 and Hunter’s Point, the traditional Crips/Bloods fun, not to mention the Asian gangs who are fighting for turf in the Avenues and Ocean Beach).

Liberalism isn’t only a mental disorder, it will get you killed. Heather Fong was like hiring Aunt Esther to lead a charge against terrorists in Baghdad.

I hope the transgendered replacement is nearly as strong as Ms. Fong was. //sarc

Cops have control over this, if they wish.

Theoretically, it should be impossible to find a more unqualified candidate than Heather, but then, San Fransicko is "the city that knows how."

I was thinking she looks more like Charlie Callas.

The Santuary City, blatantly defiant of federal government laws, gay-marriage advocate, mayor wants to run for higher public office and he asks his police department to GIVE BACK a pay raise HE authorized? What a frickin’ tool!
I truly hope the cops tell him to pack sand and take the money they earn every day walking/driving their beats.
But the scary part of all of this...he just might win! Glad I live on the right coast...

Brown and Newsom are California’s Dem choice in 2010?

Man, there has to be a non - RINO pub out there who could beat those two moonbats.
