S.F. police chief leaving, announces retirement
Chronicle ^ | December 20, 2008 | Rachel Gordon

San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong, who rose through the ranks to become the city's first female chief nearly five years ago, will announce her retirement today on a radio program hosted by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

She plans to step down in April, once she reaches her fifth anniversary as San Francisco's top cop and after she helps with the search for her successor, she said. Fong has served in the police department for more than 30 years.

The announcement ends speculation about her long-rumored departure and comes as the city approaches its 100th homicide of the year.

Fong told The Chronicle that she is not being pushed out by the mayor, who has publicly supported her, or by her critics, including members of the rank-and-file, middle managers in the SFPD and the police officers' union.

"None of us can be chief forever," said Fong, 52. "I felt I've accomplished a lot."

Still, she acknowledged in the interview, "It has not been an easy four or five years. There are people who thought they should have been chief."

The critics, she said, can apply for her job. "Now they'll have the opportunity."

Fong has done 1 thing right in five years. She re-opened the investigations of the deaths of Officers Radetich and Young from 1970 and 1971.

Be honest, If San Francisco fell in to the Pacific due to an earthquake, would anyone really care?

Yes. We'd lose really good sourdough bread.

You’re thinking she really means to retire to spend more time with her family. Not the typical family.

Keep the city, get rid of the electorate.

Does she have 100,000 men under arms, or does she think 4 stars look pretty?

Yeah but you can take some of the sourdough starter to somewhere else and keep it going, just get rid of the nuts in Frisco.
Good answer.

It’s been tried. Apparently that particular starter’s blend of leavening agents is uniquely adapted to San Francisco’s microclimate.

"They have police in San Francisco???"

Yes, but their duties seem limited to:

- blockading the streets for the frequent Gay Parades and Public Sex Orgies.....
- issueing parking tickets and manning speed traps.
- managing the panhandlers, street vendors and hookers.

“They have police in San Francisco???”

Not really. They keep people on the payroll who they call police, but only so they will have an excuse to pay them.

I know, I saw an episode of Made in America with John Ratzenberg where they went to the world famous San Francisco bakery that has the same starter since the gold miners in 49. 1840 that is.
I love Sourdough bread and my wife has some starter going for about a week now. Will make a great bread and the next morning wonderful french toast.

Too damned creepy to choke down.

As an aside is Heather Fong really the wife of Chairman Mao hiding out in SF?
