This shows how perverted our electoral process has become since the 17th Amendment. The purpose of the US Senate was supposed to have been a deliberative body, whose members would operate unaffected by popular whims. In essence, the Senate was intended to have one degree of separation between the population instead of an at-large congressional district.
The Senate was never supposed to represent the interests of the people but rather the interests of the individual States.
