(CNN) -- Prominent liberal groups and gay rights proponents criticized President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday for choosing evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the presidential inauguration next month.
Warren, one of the most influential religious leaders in the nation, has championed issues such as a reduction of global poverty, human rights abuses and the AIDS epidemic.
But the founder of the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, has also adhered to socially conservative stances -- including his opposition to gay marriage and abortion rights that puts him at odds with many in the Democratic Party, especially the party's most liberal wing.
"[It's] shrewd politics, but if anyone is under any illusion that Obama is interested in advancing gay equality, they should probably sober up now," Andrew Sullivan wrote on the Atlantic Web site Wednesday.
People for the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert told CNN she is "deeply disappointed" with the choice of Warren and said the powerful platform at the inauguration should instead have been given to someone who has "consistent mainstream American values."

And since many conservatives see right through Rick Warren, Zero has managed to make everyone mad at the same time. So I’d say he’s off to a terrific start.
amen
I hope the Catholic Church has enough respect for its values to avoid public participation in coronating this acolyte of mollech
What? Obama didn’t want Rev Wright? hmmmm
Good. Mr. Warren can quote from Washington's Farewell Address, or the Declaration of Independence.
Gay marriage just got kicked hard to the curb in liberal California and this broad says the gay agenda is "mainstream?"
I have no issue with Rick Warren asking for God to bless this president and this nation. For how many years did the Rev Billy Graham do this very same thing. That said, I would rather that it was the Rev Franklin Graham but I have a feeling his comments on muslims doesn’t sit well with Obama.
I personally don’t care much for Rick Warren and his stand on the “emerging church.” Didn’t he say something after Palin was selected that she called him for advice when the truth was he called her.
Barack Obama is far more wicked than I ever suspected.
He is luring decent people into his web of deceit for his own cynical political ends.
He is worse than Bill and Hillary Clinton. He is even more dangerous.
He wants to try and put a stamp of approval on his evil by surrounding himself with suckers who don't see the betrayal they are destined to face.
I gather Rick Warren is a real Obama fan
Either thinks he can salvage the guy, or is deeply wracked with white liberal guilt, or both
I suspect guys like Warren have never known what it is to be played by a hustler like zerO. We are all in for hard lessons.
Having created photo ops of evangalist support to use for his next election campaign, zerO will no doubt push FOCA and repeal of “don’t ask dont tell” shortly after the coronation
Who???
“Tell ya what -
most of us are none too happy with Rick Warren, a self proclaimed evangelical,
giving the invocation for the inauguration of a pro-infanticide president”
And if an athiest gave the invocation we will complain that this is a nation under God and a religious figure should have given the invocation.
Can’t win either way.
Probably the least hypocritical thing that ‘bammy could have done was have Wright or Pflaeger give the invocation.
Yeah, we’d have criticized him for it, but at least he’d not be a hypocrite.
Very interesting. Very interesting thread. BUMP for all posters.
I can't think of a money or vote reason to do this. He's a leftist, but he may not be as much as a leftist as he portrayed himself to be in order to get elected. In any case it's good news.
It's very BAD news. Obama is much further left than anyone is willing to admit. He is vehemently anti-Israel, pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-military, etc. He is a student and follower of Saul Alinsky, the worst of the worst!
The real problem here is Rick. He has become way too quick to do whatever will get him media coverage. He should remember the passage about lying down with swine.
The other real problem is the fools that think that because Obama picks Rick as a speaker that something might be better. Are we so easily fooled?
