Since the presidential election, former Secretary of State Colin Powell has not been making rounds on Sunday morning talk shows with the frequency he did when supporting Barack Obama for president. But last Sunday, he popped up on CNN to criticize Rush Limbaugh for misleading, if not destroying, the Republican Party.
Powell tried to make the rejection of Limbaugh the path Republicans need to take to win elections again. Thus he asked rhetorically, Can we continue to listen to Rush Limbaugh?
Of Limbaughs supposed influence on the Republican Party, Powell said: Is this really the kind of party that we want to be when these kinds of spokespersons seem to appeal to our lesser instincts rather than our better instincts?" This is that language of an elitist, or what Limbaugh calls a Washingtonian.

There are two parties, but in name only.
The repubs in elective office, at local, state and federal levels, seem more like 3/5ths democrats. Waaaayy too many regularly cross over to support democrat positions.
The list of “true conservatives” in elective office seems very short, IMHO. And even if they start out as “true conservatives”, once elected too many are transformed and seek the acceptance of the ruling RINOs/democrats.
Then again, most of us around here voted for Bush in 2004. Are we really all that much better?
If Powell thinks he still has any influence over the conservative base of the GOP, he’s not been paying attention lately.
Maybe he forgot he endorsed a Socialist. Last time I checked, that doesn’t really go over well with the actual Conservatives.
Yes, we are that much better. This was an additional 4 years that our country was not attacked. Bush has made some big mistakes with respect to spending and now the bailout. I shutter to think what the last 4 years would have been with Lurch at the controls.
General Norman Schwartzkopf
We would have a better President ahead of us? Kerry was a liberal and all that but he would have gotten the blame for the botched economy and a host of other items.
Can we continue to listen to Rush Limbaugh?
What the hell does he mean “we”? He pushed for the Democrat, and I’d say that at least makes him an independent.
Great thread. Thanks to all posters.
You mean Huckabee? He did take a swipe at Rush and got his butt handed to him by Rush. But Rush has been far tougher on McCain over the last few years than he has Huckabee.
Powell expressed the ‘moderate’ viewpoint. No surprise.
Ever since that 1991 war, I have yearned to have Stormin’ Norman on the Presidential ticket.
He wins in a landslide.
Doesn't stop Powell from pimping himself for a job with the Annointed One.
Colon Bowel, the black (?) David Gergen
Powell got the POTUS candidate of his DREAMS and voted for the other guy because of his race. THe POTUS candidate of his dreams? Lost.
This is just more fodder for the eventual attempt at restoration of the Fairness Doctrine.
Powell was an fair non-combat Captain, and a Major. He should have been retired as a Lt.Col (maybe). They were comparing him to McClellan, but no one who ever worked with him saw much organizational ability.
Schwartzkopf? I don' t know whose orders he was following, but the peace deal he made with the surrendering Iraqi forces was, IMHO, a serious blunder that gave away the fruits of a tremendous victory and allowed the Iraqi military the means to continue to ethnically cleanse the Kurds.
You do that...
We had a real conservative party and conservatives let it get taken over by Washingtonians. Concentrate on winning it back.
I wouldn't call voting for someone based on skin color a particularly high instinct. Unless you're a herd animal or a schooling fish. Not to mention Powell was too gutless to name his endorsement until the last hour of the campaign.
If the RNC wants my support ever again, in cash or votes, they will have to loudly and soundly repudiate RINOs like Powell and McCain.
Principle above Party. The reverse gets us nowhere.
