Gay activists furious with Obama By: Ben Smith and Nia-Malika Henderson December 17, 2008 06:32 PM EST
Barack Obamas choice of a prominent evangelical minister to perform the invocation at his inauguration is a conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November, but it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California is looking for a fight.
Rick Warren, the senior pastor of Saddleback Church in southern California, opposes abortion rights but has taken more liberal stances on the government role in fighting poverty, and backed away from other evangelicals staunch support for economic conservatism. But its his support for the California constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage that drew the most heated criticism from Democrats Wednesday.
Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans, the president of Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solomonese, wrote Obama Wednesday. [W]e feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.
The rapid, angry reaction from a range of gay activists comes as the gay rights movement looks for an opportunity to flex its political muscle. Last summer gay groups complained, but were rebuffed by Obama, when an ex-gay singer led Obamas rallies in South Carolina. And many were shocked last month when voters approved the California ban.

If the men in the Democrat Party go old Democrat on moral/family issues, then watch out.
Settle down ladies. This is only a ceremony. Hussein will do your bidding in good time.
Believe me, Rick Warren’s views will go in one big ear and out the other.
You have a true friend in Hussein.
It would be great if Obama just gave lip service to their cause to get their money and support though.
But remember, Obama invited a LGBT band to march in the inaugural parade, a band which will also march in the the notorious Southern Decadence festival. It's astounding that the gay reaction to Warren is controversial in the MSM, while this is not.
If Obama were forced to disinvite the gay band instead of Warren, that'd be something.
Are any social conservative groups attempting to help the blacks and other social conservative Dems keep the LGBT crowd from further ruining their party and the nation?
Any real Christian or person of any real morality and religious would refuse to speak at 0bama’s inauguration.
Honestly now. Is there anyone abominable sodomites are not "furious" with?
A lot like muslims in that respect aren't they?
...got the brand name popcorn popping now
Why doesn’t he just get “Rev” Wright to do it?
