Winter storm warning for Las Vegas, 6 inches of snow possible

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect through 6 a.m. Thursday with 3 to 6 inches of snow possible, even in the lowest levels of the Las Vegas Valley, including the Strip.

Snow was falling this afternoon in much of the Las Vegas Valley. Forecasters said heavy snow is possible in the valley and desert areas of Clark, Lincoln and southern Nye counties.

An advisory from the weather service this afternoon called the snow event "extremely rare."

Forecasters said snow will continue to fall through the afternoon before tapering off Thursday morning. Up to 10 inches is possible along the foothills above 2,500 feet in elevation.

The Valleys around Los Angeles are supposed to get to 32 tonight. Might see snow in even some more exotic locations. Would be interesting in January or February. But one week before Christmas is crazy stuff.

There’s a ground stop at McCarran - no flights in or out. They have no snow removal equipment. Blogger VegasRex says NHP is turning cars around at Primm on I-15 and saying either get a room in Primm or go back to Vegas. No Interstate traffic is coming into Las Vegas on I-15 north or south. Cab companies are stopping service. The streets near me still look OK, but very wet. Scattered power outages, but the Strip area is still on.

According to the High Priests of Global Warming, GW could usher in a new Ice Age.

Go figure.

The 5, the 14 and the 15 are all closed tonight. Only way north from Los Angeles is the 101 and a long trip. Saw a report that it was snowing in San Louis Obispo, so the 101 may not even work tonight. This storm will be hitting Texas and Oklahoma on Friday. Gonna be some potential for some nasty ice storms. Lots of moisture sucked in off the Pacific with this one.

Thanks for that link. Missed that thread. Yesterday the local weather experts were predicting possible water spouts and some snow down to 2,500 feet. No local expert saw this much snow coming. And it is too cold for twisting. This storm is gonna cause havoc in the middle of the nation.

About 3" on the vehicle when leaving work this afternoon.

Took me an hour and 45 min to get home, what a headache!

Still snowing now and supposed to continue until morning, the airport is closed, talk of school closures in the morning. 6" predicted for the strip!

I may not go to work, right at freezing now, supposed to get down to 27 tonight - big skating rink tomorrow morning!

Kids are excited, the boy was working on his second ever snow man....

All in all, kinda neat!

Hi - good to hear from you. Yes, cold up here, but no snow to speak of. We only got about an inch a couple of days ago - I’m amazed at what’s happening in Las Vegas.

We desperately need the moisture so maybe it will come north (as I bite my tongue) soon. Just this morning, driving to work in 9’ temps, I was joking with Bob about time to move south to Las Vegas. Guess that’s out now.

Seems to have morphed into a cold, moderate rain in the last couple of hours - if it doesn’t get colder overnight, we might not get as much snow on the Strip as they predicted.

It’s just crazy. Besides the 10-12 inches we’re expected to have by tomorrow morning, I just checked our extended forecast for the next week. It’s going to snow every day and every night for the next seven days except for this Saturday. All that snow piled on top of tonight’s snowfall, and we’re going to be buried for a while to come. Temps will continue to include some sub-zeros, with wind chill temps as low as 12 below. I hate global warming.

If you are planning a drive to Big Bear, wait a couple of days for the roads to be clear and dry. The best, safest way up in Hwy 30. Yes, it is a longer drive. But the slope is more gradual making it easier on the car and safer for you. Come back down while the sun is still on the road. Once the shade hits it, it flash freezes. I lived in Big Bear for four years and worked in the E.R. It is so easy to go “over the side.”
