The woman called the hospital and said she had traveled from her home in war-torn Sudan to the United States. She was seeking her mother-in-law's blessing of her pregnancy, but now that she was here, she feared there was something wrong -- and any trouble would be multiplied by five.
So the staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center told her to come in right away. When physician William Sweeney gave her an ultrasound, it showed all he needed to know: quintuplets at 19 weeks of development.
If mother and children were to survive, the doctor concluded, they would need all the help they could get. That began 11 weeks of intensive treatment involving more than 30 physicians, nurses and other specialists at the hospital in Annapolis.
Yesterday, doctors and the woman's family announced the good news. Mother and the five babies, born Dec. 2, were just fine. They were the first quintuplets in the hospital's 106-year history, the first in Maryland in more than three years. And although they will spend the next three weeks in the medical center's neonatal unit, the prognosis is good.

Was she here legally
Was she here legally?
It doesn't matter. Under current law, they are citizens of the good ol' USA. They could be president someday. (2043 to be exact)
As much as we need immigration reform, America is the best and I hope we never stop helping kids with serious medical needs from other countries.
Leaving the Sudan was a wise thing for her to do. This is NOT like migrant workers looking for more money or places to deal drugs.
We used to welcome people who managed to escape hell-holes like the Soviet Union, Vietnam and Red China, and their babies, too.
If this woman wants freedom for her and her children, and there is no reasonable possibility of getting it in a place like the Sudan, I am happy to welcome her.
For the record, I sold my last house, a starter home, to Sudanese refugees. They were polite, employed, and in good spirits despite the fact that their husbands in the Sudan are “missing.” They are Christians.
I know the woman in the story’s husband is in the military. The service may be compulsory, others may chime in on that.
I would rather have this woman and her five anchor babies here than one red Chinese spy working in U.S. industry or raiding our Universities.

And if she chose to terminate the pregnancy, others would go ape-sh*t
I am extremely proud to be from the most generous, kind country on the planet. We obviously need immigration reform, but a better solution to the situation in this story would be for all the doctors and nurses and regular citizens who want to help and finance this family to do so. Nobody, not even legal citizens should be entitled to health care that I am forced to pay for. You want health care? Then buy it. Or appeal to the generosity of others and if they deem you worthy of help they will help you voluntarily.
Then a one-way back to the place of origin, if our government had any balls.
What are the odds these kids will be on welfare (100% or 100%)?
Pay your taxes and watch government spend the money on illegals and criminals.
And we wonder why we are broke?
And choosing to stay in Sudan would certainly have been the same as choosing to terminate the pregnancy in this case. On the other hand, the money the US taxpayers and the hospital will end up paying for these quintuplets’ survival (even if they leave for Sudan next month) would easily save thousands of ordinary children’s lives back in Sudan.
I would like to know more about this lady before commenting on those issues.
it is easier to accept a mother coming over because she believes something is wrong with her child, or someone is trying to escape to freedom than people coming over for freebies and to exploit our nation.
How are these anchor babies? These babies cannot keep this lady here. If she’s here on a visitor visa she’s going to have to go home to the Sudan, and she’s going to end up taking her babies with her.
What exactly is it that leads you to the conclusion this lady is an illegal alien? In the article it says she came here to visit her mother-in-law. She's probably here on a visa. It's not like we have a border with Sudan where this woman could have snuck in. She probably came in on a plane with her passport and visa in hand.
“What are the odds these kids will be on welfare (100% or 100%)?”
What makes you so certain these kids will stay here? The mother was just here visiting. She wouldn't have an immigrant visa if she is just here visiting. Her kids might be considered citizens because they were born here, but they can't file paperwork for an immigrant visa for their mother until they turn 21. Chances are she'll go home to her husband and take the kids with her.
“Adwai Malual, 28, had come to the United States to obtain the blessing of her mother-in-law, a family figure who traditionally plays an important role in a woman’s pregnancy, family members said.”
Riiight Not that I can blame her.
Did she pay for the flight from Sudan herself?
The family does not have health insurance. It typically costs $1,150 a day for a baby in the intensive care unit. Hospital officials, who declined yesterday to put a final price tag on the weeks of treatment and the choreographed births, said they would work with the family on payment and absorb some of the cost if necessary.
As for the quintuplets, after a few more weeks, once they can feed on their own and maintain body temperature, they will be ready to go home, although it remains unclear where that home ultimately will be.

It sounds to me like the family and the hospital are making arrangements for payment. Everyone here is so quick to determine that taxpayers will pay for these babies. It isn’t even clear that the taxpayers will pay for any part of this medical care. Maybe we could save the outrage until it is clear that there is something to be outraged over???
Right. I am sure they have a couple hundred grand laying around ready to pay the bill.
It sounds like there is a large extended family, which might be able to come up with some of the money. The hospital also seems willing to absorb some of the costs as well. Quintuplets are good publicity for them. It doesn’t sound like the hospital is worried about their payment, judging from the article. Everyone is jumping to conclusions, and assuming the worst here. It doesn’t appear that this woman was even in this country illegally, let alone an illegal alien taking taxpayer money to pay costs for her medical care.
