Bush says sacrificed free-market principles to save economy

US President George W. Bush said in an interview Tuesday he was forced to sacrifice free market principles to save the economy from "collapse." "I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system," Bush told CNN television, saying he had made the decision "to make sure the economy doesn't collapse."

Bush's comments reflect an extraordinary departure from his longtime advocacy for an unfettered free market, as his administration has orchestrated unprecedented government intervention in the face of a dire financial crisis.

"I am sorry we're having to do it," Bush said.

But Bush said government action was necessary to ease the effects of the crisis, offering perhaps his most dire assessment yet of the country's economy.

"I feel a sense of obligation to my successor to make sure there is not a, you know, a huge economic crisis. Look, we're in a crisis now. I mean, this

You’re excused since you are not alone in not knowing the buck stops with the POTUS. If the ship sinks, no matter what, the Captain is responsible. If it happens on your watch, you are responsible no matter what. Sheesh, most ninth graders know that. Of course there were other factors, but Bush was right there with them singing all the same hymns at the church of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

BTW, since you like slinging insults at people you don’t know, here’s one just for you: You sound like Cynthia McKinney with a lisp.

Bush may seem kinda dumb. But what about Paulson? What’s his story?

Using socialism to save socialized capitalism from collapse.

Throw more gas on the fire!

*sigh*

Mr. Bush...

Sheesh.

Somehow, you never learned plain, basic facts. Maybe it's a natural consequence of living such an aloof, priveleged life.

Conservatism is compassion. Trying to ignore and/or deny reality is not.

Capitalism works. Every. Single. Time.

Socialism fails. Every. Single. Time.

You had such potential...

This is not a ship nor is it a dictatorship...Or at least it hasn’t been up until 2009. Have you been watching CNN?

I've watched him fight against every boot licking commie in our government for the last little bit of freedom that we will ever know in our lifetimes.

Facts not in evidence - examples please.

There are elites in this country that have debated about whether people need to be on a leash or if they can remain free and get along on their own.

It's become somewhat apparent that GWB is indeed one of these elites whether he plays it up or not. It's in his genes and he's lost the ability to conceal it.

In a free country, that never works for long because someone else is always there to turn it their way.

The statists may indeed try to mold the country the way they want it, but it's the lover of Liberty's neverending job to fight it at every turn.

As a former drunken sailor, I take offense to your last comment.

Me too.

As a drunken sailor I only spent my OWN money.

Just one more piece of evidence that GWB is a less-than-bright socialist working hard right up to the last minute trying to be one of the worst presidents.

It's not my job to cover every day for the last eight years that you have failed to watch what has happened. It is your job however to think like a Dem and pretend that this is "a ship" that only has a captain...or some such elementary stuff like that.

If you don't want to take the time to go through every post on this forum for the last eight years to find out what went on in the halls of your "government" then at least use your common sense and know that GWB was not liked by the media arm of the Communist/Dems, namely the Congress and the elite schools, who want desperately to control you, take away your freedom and that of your children.

Nuff said.

We do need regulatione even in a free market...

Yes, we do. As little as possible. But what we've gotten over the years instead is corrupt and/or incompetent government drones who did not do their jobs. As a result and is as so typical with government, they then made even more laws that were never fully enforced. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I really don't know the answer to this aside from the unlikely sight of the lifeless bodies of the corrupt hanging as examples from DC lamp posts.

At least drunken sailors eventually run out of money. They can’t force the whole crew to subsidize their spending binge forever.

I have never been of the opinion that the POTUS is responsible for all the actions of government. I am, however, of the opinion that a man who sells himself as a conservative President has a duty to stand bravely in the path of evil, socialism, corruption, and rank stupidity and either defeat it or die trying (figuratively). GWB has, to his benefit, done that (unevenly) in the GWOT. But he's done almost none of that on any other issue.

Near as I can tell - a Wall St. insider with a history of contributions to Donks that made him acceptable for Donk-controlled Senate approval.

I wonder why people thought that the W apple would fall far from the GHWB tree?

GHWB thought that raising taxes to appease the left would be a good idea, despite his promise not to, then when the economy inevitably tanked, got beat by Clinton on economic issues.

George Herbert Walker Bush and George Walker Bush. Dumb and Dumber.

Goldman Sachs alum. Not as bright as his speaking voice — which is one of absolute certainty in everything from ordering shrimp cocktail to $700 billion — would lead you to believe.
