US President George W. Bush said in an interview Tuesday he was forced to sacrifice free market principles to save the economy from "collapse." "I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system," Bush told CNN television, saying he had made the decision "to make sure the economy doesn't collapse."
Bush's comments reflect an extraordinary departure from his longtime advocacy for an unfettered free market, as his administration has orchestrated unprecedented government intervention in the face of a dire financial crisis.
"I am sorry we're having to do it," Bush said.
But Bush said government action was necessary to ease the effects of the crisis, offering perhaps his most dire assessment yet of the country's economy.
"I feel a sense of obligation to my successor to make sure there is not a, you know, a huge economic crisis. Look, we're in a crisis now. I mean, this

...There, fixed it!
Abandon freedom to attain security. That’s why totalitarian regimes thrive. And the security attained ultimately turns into oppression. Conservatives instinctively understand this. It seems to be lost on Bush.
At this point, I’m quite happy to abandon Bush.
The big problem is that history written by liberals will go down and say how his deregulation and laissez faire attitude, like Hoover, caused the recession.
That statment by Bush is akin to the global warming has to get colder first statement.
Total BS!! Bush will be the next Herbert Hoover regardless of what he does. So he just needs to sit tight one more month, and Pardon Campos and Campiana from their bogus prison sentence.
This has sealed his fate as far as where his place in history is. President Bush- president who ushered in socialism to the former United States of America. If the free market is what caused the economy to collapse, it was not a free market. Free markets are truly supply and demand and fix themselves.
What a nation of whiners we have, thinking we are entitled to prosperity. Last I checked we are endowed with the right to life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness, not a guarantee.
I guess since we already deleted the right to life, changing our priciples was only a matter of time.... Paul Revere, where ARE you?????

8 years of “compassionate conservatism”
“Freddie Mae — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — I see the heads who are here; I want to thank you all for coming — — have committed to provide more money for lenders...Freddie Mac recently began 25 initiatives around the country to dismantle barriers and create greater opportunities for homeownership. One of the programs is designed to help deserving families who have bad credit histories to qualify for homeownership loans...”

What government action, specifically, is this article referring to?
well, he does mention a ferret in is moniker....
Reminds me of the famous quote from Vietnam: “We destroyed the village in order to save it.”
RE :Ive abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system,
OK , I am thinking about setting up a WHAT THE #%$#% IS GWB DOING NOW? ping list, I know meandog wants on it.
because everytime GWB opens his mouth I get upset. Exactly what capitalistic principles does he have ?
My opinion here... but Bush sacraficed his free market principals years ago when he allowed congressional Republicans to spend like drunken sailors.
he likes the profits of capitalism but doesn’t like the losses.
As a former drunken sailor, I take offense to your last comment.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed....
Bottom line: he doesn’t believe in the market in the first place.
Well done Bush, just before the end of your term, you’ve managed to utter the dumbest quote of your Presidency. This will hang with you like Clinton’s “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky” and Bush Sr’s “Read my lips, no new taxes.”
This is scrappleface, right?
