(IsraelNN.com) Gaza terrorists escalated their attacks on the western Negev Wednesday morning, launching a barrage of Kassam rockets at the coastal city of Ashkelon shortly before 11:00 a.m. A number of strategic installations are located in the area, including an electric power plant.
At least two of the more advanced types of the homemade missiles struck the southern section of the city, sending several people into severe emotional shock. Three workers at a factory in the city's industrial zone were evacuated to Barzilai Hospital after they complained of ringing in their ears following the attack.
A third Kassam rocket slammed into an area near Kibbutz Yad Mordechai, an agricultural community south of Ashkelon that is world famous for its honey, jams, oils and other condiments. No one was injured in the kibbutz and there were no reports of damage.
The attacks bring the number of missiles fired at Israel since the beginning of the day to ten rockets and one mortar shell. The first barrage by Gaza terrorists began just as children were leaving their homes to go to school Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday, the number of rockets that have struck the western Negev in the past eight years topped the 10,000 mark.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak has ordered the Gaza Crossings to remain closed for a second day in response to the attacks. Barak decided to close the crossings on Tuesday in retaliation for the rocket fire, cancelling a delivery of foodstuffs and other humanitarian aid to the region as a result.
There’s been at least 15 rocket/mortar attacks already today. Eventually one of these rockets is going to get “lucky”.
it’s sad, but it will probably take a “lucky” rocket strike killing Israeli citizens before the Israeli gov will do anything of significance to stop these strikes.
The only protection the folks in Sderdot and Ashkelon get now is the Gaza border crossings closed and an occassional strike on a rocket launch crew after they have already launched

Olmert: Qassams will receive response
Published: 12.17.08, 19:38 / Israel News
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert voted in the Kadima primary elections and spoke about the Qassam rockets raining down on the Negev.
“The fire just stresses what we have been saying all along, which is that we cannot consent to a situation in which there is a supposed lull, but the reality is completely different. Of course this requires our attention, and there will be a response,” Olmert said. (Ronen Medzini)
hasn’t he turned over the reins yet . . . Olmert wouldn’t know what a proper “response” was if it smacked him upside the head.
No flaming from me akhi. We act like cowardly idiots so we get smacked around like cowardly idiots.
I agree - no flaming from here.
It seems some posters fail to realize the Ashkelon is an overwhelmingly Jewish city today in Israel proper.
