Send a message to President-Elect Obama about the FairTax
Americans For Fair Taxation ^

Posted on 12/16/2008 4:58:35 PM PST by Man50D

The most compelling messages to elected officials are those in your own words, not just some cookie-cutter form letter. So please take a moment to craft a personal note about the FairTax. And remember, regardless of whomever you voted for in the general election, we all need to make Mr. Obama into a FairTax supporter, so please be courteous in your message about the FairTax.

In terms of talking points about how the FairTax can save our economy, you can view our detailed talking points or look below for some key points to highlight:

Rescue the homeowner and you rescue the economy The FairTax will end the harmful practice of withholding taxes from paychecks, and millions of Americans will see a huge boost in their take home pay--enough to save their homes and pay mortgage bills.

A $10 trillion dollar stimulus program funded with private investments Economists say the FairTax will attract literally trillions of dollars into our economy from offshore. That means new jobs right here in America (a point I know you readily appreciate), higher wages and a stock market that goes up instead of down.

Bring Back the "Made in America" Label The FairTax ends the retail price disadvantage American producers suffer under the income tax system. The income tax system adds up to 20% to the price of American products and that chases our manufacturing and service industries offshore. The FairTax gives American companies--and jobs--a fair chance.

Our economy works when wage earners prosper The FairTax makes our economy works again and restores consumer confidence by putting more money in wage earners' pockets. It attacks the problem at the base of the pyramid where average people live--not at the pinnacle. It ends the tax disincentives to upward mobility, savings, investment and capital formation.

"Not nearly as much ignorance as is being shown by the unfairtaxers when it comes to the political reality of the day".

Don't you think that if we educate the American people we can overcome the 'political reality' of today?

You say the 'unfairtaxers'. Show me what is unfair about the Fair Tax. Let's see the facts as to why you use that term.

"Get it tested in some 3rd world country, then get back to us, OK?"

You mean like the 3rd world country America is headed for?

I see you have no answers to my legitimate questions other than spewing some kind of garbage, kind of like what liberals do.

Or maybe you're an evasive, collectivist slime trail and I'm exactly correct. Beat up any Girl Scouts for the tax money on their cookie sales lately, or do you just have your hired goons in the IRS do it for you, Brave Attacker of the Fair Tax?

Or maybe you work for the IRS directly? That would explain your creepy Oz witch flying-monkey-loyalty to the Marxist beast of graduated income tax. Ding dong, your soul is dead, Obama Voter.

I don’t to be manipulated by the nannystate govt.

Now to be fair, this not an argument against the Fair tax as it is flat in its original formulation. But you have to deal with this concern. It is very easy to break up a sales tax into 100 different little sales taxes.

What do you want to bet that if Obama went for the Fair Tax, he would have the tax rate set so high it would break everyone. Becareful what you ask for.

One fundamental strength of a consumption tax is the taxpayer ultimately determines the rate. If Congress critters set the rate too high then the people will offset the excessive rate by decreasing their purchases. Less purchases translates into less tax collected and less taken in by the federal government. This principle is reflected in Alexander Hamilton's Federalist Paper #21. To quote:

It is a signal advantage of taxes on articles of consumption, that they contain in their own nature a security against excess. They prescribe their own limit; which cannot be exceeded without defeating the end proposed, that is, an extension of the revenue. When applied to this object, the saying is as just as it is witty, that, "in political arithmetic, two and two do not always make four." If duties are too high, they lessen the consumption; the collection is eluded; and the product to the treasury is not so great as when they are confined within proper and moderate bounds. This forms a complete barrier against any material oppression of the citizens by taxes of this class, and is itself a natural limitation of the power of imposing them.

Realize that nObama’s “vision” is diametrically opposed to the Fair Tax vision.

Fair Tax had a mild chance under Pres Bush. It has NO chance under King Zer0.

Oh really? You better tell Obama staff who are talking with Americans For Fair Taxation about The Fair Tax.

a national sales tax will turn into what Gov Paterson plans for NY. We’ll have special taxes on regular coke and fat and anything the govt doesn’t like.

I suggest you read the bill(HR25/S1025)There will be one single rate for all products and services.

The Fairtax movement is dead for the next four years, if not forever. No way will these bozo socialist willingly give up the progressive income tax! Karl Marx would roll over in his grave!

That same tired refrain has been used many times in the past and yet some how The Fair Tax has garnered 76 cosponsors. The simple truth is Congress critters don't want to admit the power and therefore final decision lies with the American public, not the politicians.

ok but how do you keep it that way? Yes, the same argument is used against the flat tax. But I’m in NY and here the sales tax is turning into a manipulative weapon right before my eyes.

"It is very easy to break up a sales tax into 100 different little sales taxes"

You have a legitimate point. There are things in the Fair Tax that need to be worked out but I still feel the Fair Tax is better than our current system. I find it interesting that we claim to live in a 'free country' yet when April 15th comes around Americans are afraid of a bunch of accountants. By the way, who gave authority to the IRS (accountants) to carry weapons and who gave them the authority to be a law enforcement agency? The Fair Tax would at least rid us of this outlaw agency, then we could work out the other particulars.

"Both plans require congress to give up the power of the purse,..."

And those in power couldn't use the IRS against their political enemies. The Clinton's are masters at using that illegal agency to destroy folks. One way to control people is to keep them in debt.

Wouldn't that be the equivalent of asking Dracula to try some garlic or sunshine?

ok but how do you keep it that way?

How did we prevent Congress from granting amnesty to illegal aliens? The people resoundingly spoke out against amnesty. The Fair Tax will be transparent as the rate will be itemized on every receipt. Th people will immediately see any change in the tax rate. Another and more fundamental reason is listed in post #27.

Both plans must have an enforcement/collections branch.

Businesses in forty five states already collect sales taxes. The Fair Tax will simply be an additional line on the current sales tax reporting form. Businesses will send the tax to the states, if the states choose to collect the tax. The taxing authority will be the already existing Treasury Department. The infrastructure is already in place. No additional infrastructure will be needed.

If you don't think businesses are going to get audited under the consumption tax, you got another thing coming.

Businesses and people get audited currently with the income tax. The Fair Tax will eliminate the need and ability of the IRS to intrude on individual's privacy and restrict their freedom since the agency will no longer exist.

Some products won't be taxed because of heart strings i.e.,

All items will be taxed per (Sec.201)(Chapt 9)(b)(2) To tax all consumption of goods and services in the United States once, without exception, but only once.

Flat income tax is historical, Biblical, and contains much less overhead. Infrastructure is already there as incomes are already being taxed. They just need to make one bracket and eliminate deductions of any sort. No questions and no cutoff on income levels (in my dream world).

A flat income tax is still a tax on income and consequently continues the oppressive control the IRS has over the people. Overhead will be far less since the IRS will no longer exist. The existing infrastructer, sans the IRS, will be used with The Fair Tax. There will be only one bracket with The Fair Tax. Deductions will be eliminated since income will not be taxed. No forms to fill out. April 15th will just another day.

Both plans require congress to give up the power of the purse, so neither will ever get implemented.

They will if the people demand a change. That is evident with the 76 who have already sign onto The Fair Tax.

In all reality, we shouldn't have a national tax at all and each state should be required to send it's share to the Fed gubmint, yet again, welcome to Chris' dream world.

I wouldn't disagree with that but you would need to repeal Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to levy and collect taxes.

There is nothing “legitimate” about the fairtax, therefore your “questions” are pointless, if you even asked any.
