Student Says School Persecuted Him for Being Conservative Tuesday, December 16, 2008
E-Mail Print Share:
A former student at the Rhode Island College School of Social Work is suing the school and several of his professors for discrimination, saying he was persecuted by the school's "liberal political machine" for being a conservative.
William Felkner, 45, says the New England college and six professors wouldn't approve his final project on welfare reform because he was on the "wrong" side of political issues and countered the school's "progressive" liberal agenda.
Felkner said his problems with his professors began in his first semester, in the fall of 2004, when he objected in an e-mail to one of his professors that the school was showing and promoting Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" on campus. He said he objected because no opposing point of view was presented.
He said Professor James Ryczek wrote to him on Oct. 15, 2004, saying he was proud of his bias and questioning Felkner's ability to "fit with the profession."

Look for more online colleges to start popping up to serve homeschoolers.

There's a world of difference between telling someone they don't have to read something (choice), and telling them they can't read it (censorship).
Your logic is akin to Natalie Maines whining about "censorship", when all that happened to her was people chose not to buy her music.
Hey, this could turn into a cottage industry for conservatives. Got to a liberal college, find some issue to get them hacked off at you, and then when you don’t graduate ... sue the pants off them. Free money!
I’ve been saving articles like this. SW school was certainly Liberal Indoctrination school for me. I finally had to drop one class because the teacher was so far left wing I couldn’t stand it anymore. I swear if I had the money I’d open an alternate school... the Limball Insitutue could have a satelite social worker campus or something. I barely escaped SW school and I never joined NASW (Nat Assoc of Soc Workers) although I’d save money and gain insurance, I can’t stand the politics! All of us non-libeal Sw’s are in the closet and we are fed up!
Sounds like a “career path”.
“There’s a world of difference between telling someone they don’t have to read something (choice), and telling them they can’t read it (censorship).”
The surface of your post I deliberately ignored as irrelevant. After all, how does one know whether they like what someone posted lest they read it? I was sure your point was that I don’t need to bother posting on a thread with which I disagree. Since when has that been the standard? Isn’t this whole forum about disagreeing with eachother, which often means disagreeing with the artical quoted in the thread?
Also, the Natalie Maines analogy is unnecessary. I realize of course that you didn’t literally censor me, although your attitude was at least censorious (arguing, as I interpreted it, that I shouldn’t have posted what I posted instead of arguing the issue).
As a conservative, he needs to nut up and stop whining. Remember, living well is the best revenge.
Reads like a quitter’s solution.
Wrong! There are lots of them. Here's one.
Grove City College is a Christian liberal arts college in Grove City, Pennsylvania, about sixty-five miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. According to the College Bulletin, its stated three-fold mission is to provide an excellent education at an affordable price in a thoroughly Christian environment.[1] College president Richard Jewell has said, "The two tenets that this school is most about are faith and freedom."[2]
The school emphasizes a humanities core curriculum, which endorses the Judeo-Christian Western tradition and the free market. While loosely associated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), the college is non-denominational and does not require students to sign a statement of faith, though they are required to attend sixteen chapel services per semester.
“Reads like a quitters solution.”
Do you mean that filing a lawsuit is a quitter’s solution, or that my solution is? If it’s the former, I’m not sure I agree that people who file frivolous lawsuits are what I’d call winners.
I actually laughed out loud at that particular quote in the article. How utterly stupid.
Liberty Univ. , Hillsdale, BYU (no you don’t HAVE to be a Mormon to go there), Bob Jones, West Point, Annapolis and the AF Academy. There are a few.
“Now they have her working an internship with violent sociopathic kids.”
That is the job. She will spend a lot of her time with violent sociopathic people, drug addicts, prostitutes, child abusers, and thugs. Normal people don’t need social workers.
As a FF/Paramedic, I work closely with social workers. On the bright side, many of them develop some pretty conservative views, once they are out in the field for a while. Probably the professors sit in their offices, and teach ideology, but real world experience is a better teacher. They become conservative pretty quickly.
Suing is an elevated form of discussion.
The University said to him “You can’t say that”, he replied with “Yes I can, and the court will agree with me, they will force you to let me say that, and also give me some of your money to prove it”.
Now we await to find out if his assertion is true.
This is the very best first way to make sure that various institutions understand and practice the First Amendment. In spite of a number of lawsuits forcing the institutions to allow freedom of speech, most lawsuits didn’t include the money factor, and thus were only good for that one case. As a result, 75% of these institutions have First Amendment violating speech codes.
The method used here, suing for money, increases the chance that others will sit up and take note.
I disagree. First, I doubt if there is anywhere to go that will teach a balanced Social Work curriculum.
Second, even if you can find such a place it may be inconvenient or too pricy or over subscribed.
Third, they deserve to be punished for their malfeasance as do most of the teaching institutions in this country and until we start hitting them in the wallet nothing will change and the liberal indoctrination machine will survive intact.
“That is the job. She will spend a lot of her time with violent sociopathic people, drug addicts, prostitutes, child abusers, and thugs.”
People like that need prisons and mental institutions, not social workers. But I’m just a heartless b*****d, at least that’s what my friends say.
By your own standard, that's somewhat the theme of both the article and the general discussion. Protection from censorship has nothing to do with what you (or anyone else) "likes". It's about protecting what one doesn't necessarily like or agree with. It's easy to protect popular speech. It's not so easy to do so when you (or the masses) disagree. That is essentially the underlying issue in the article, and to the trend of suppression of conservative thought in academia that's discussed throughout this particular forum. I think you've been around here long enough to know that.
As for my “censorious” attitude, your proclaiming as such it so does not make it so. I never said you don't have the right to disagree, but merely used a relatively simple, contemporary, and applicable analogy about equating mere disagreement to nefarious and nonexistent “censorship".
To decry someone as "censors" for disagreeing with you is one of the things we typically rail about around here, and is generally considered an indicator of an intellectually indefensible argument (i.e. the left's typical default position in a debate "If I can't defeat your stupid ideas, I'll just denigrate you", you right-wing, neo-con, reactionary pig!).
I have no more interest in censoring you than I do in censoring Natalie Maines. Frankly, I really don't care. Say what you want. But unless you come up with a fact-based point, rather than constructing your argument on your presumption of my "attitude", I just choose not to listen.
Clever. Very clever.
“School of Social Work”
Well, duh. Of course it is going to be full of commies, fascists, and other State Worshipers. What did he expect?
Go to a school of engineering or science. Most of them will judge you by your work, not your politics (except for the “Global Warming” garbage, which is now a religion in certain sciences...)
