As a data point, the "2 trillion tons of ice melt" they are talking about represents about 0.0074% of the "land ice" in the world. They are also not mentioning ice _accumulation_ that's happened in some regions, for instance parts of Antarctica.
Also, take a look at the animation at the bottom of this page:

Most of the summer's anomalies have been wiped out - and remember the anomalies are against historical averages. Also, we're not even quite to winter yet, and it looks to be a very cold one...
We're about to the end of 2008, with sunspot activity still at a definite minimum - looks to be more cold times ahead.
I hope my calculations are correct:
2 trillion tons of ice would make a block of ice that is 7.7 miles x 7.7 miles x 7.7 miles.
If I am correct, that ain’t squat!
The ice is melting...we must be doing something to cause it. Because everything has to do with us. /s
Defying Predictions, Sea Level Rise Begins to Slow
World’s oceans rise slower since 2005, fail to display predicted accelerating trend.

OF course, what none of these ninny-hammers tell you - that a bajillion tons of ice melt EVERY year in the Arctic - regardless of the climate. They completely ignore the INCREASING ice on the polar caps that is evident in the satellite imagery.
It didn’t “melt”, it simply migrated south to the US lower 48. And so what if it did melt - it hasn’t always been there.
Heard this piece of propagada on radio this morning.
The sheer volume, or weight, or frequency, or adventurousness of the scams and schemes has reached critical mass in 2008. When it blows up the planet will disappear and space aliens will have to find a new vacation destination.
2 trillion tons? Wow! Just think how many ounces that would be!
“More than 2 trillion tons of land ice in Greenland, Antarctica and Alaska have melted since 2003”
No matter what % of total land-ice that figure represents, consider what happens in all cycles - the peak (or trough) is at the highest (lowest) extreme when??? - Just as the cycle is beginning to turn in the other direction.
The recent-decades highs are in the peak-arena of a natural “warming” trend; the reversal of which is already showing its signs.
Half a mm/year?!? That is measurable? Reliably? 50mm or 2”/century?
WHICH “sea level”, since each ocean is different? i.e. Pacific vs Atlantic, as discovered when Panama Canal was built, if not before.
Or, is that a ‘calculated value’, based on volume of melted ice vs surface area of oceans?
Melting of land ice, unlike sea ice (WHICH DECREASES LEVELS ‘SLIGHTLY’), increases sea levels very slightly.
Quick Hollywood, make another penguin movie. Those cute little guys are either marching or dancing. They must be saved at any cost!
We’ve lost .0074% of the land ice since 2003? At that rate, I calculate it will take more than 67,000 years to deplete the worlds ice.
(100% divided by .0074%) times (2008 minus 2003) = 67,578 (rounded)
Interestingly, if they would have come up with .0075% instead, the numbers actually compute out to 66,666.66666 (and on and on) years, so I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised that the “point oh-oh-seven-four percent” is sorta “fudg-ey”.
