I had to snip a short paragraph in order to fit as excerpt, with Zwally's statement at the end.

As a data point, the "2 trillion tons of ice melt" they are talking about represents about 0.0074% of the "land ice" in the world. They are also not mentioning ice _accumulation_ that's happened in some regions, for instance parts of Antarctica.

Also, take a look at the animation at the bottom of this page:

http://www.socc.ca/seaice/seaice_current_e.cfm

Most of the summer's anomalies have been wiped out - and remember the anomalies are against historical averages. Also, we're not even quite to winter yet, and it looks to be a very cold one...

We're about to the end of 2008, with sunspot activity still at a definite minimum - looks to be more cold times ahead.

Sounds like we need an Ice Bailout.

(Just put it on our tab.)

Over 2T tons of ice melted in arctic since '03 (think of the polar bears!)

It's all in New Hampshire, now.

0.0074%!!!! oh geeze run for the hills people!!!

Do you think these blatant misrepresentations are largely because of the media and maybe one or two “scientists” who play ball and give them idiotic quotes to print? I hate to think NASA scientists are in on it too.

I didnt realize how important global warming was till I saw the new “the day the earth stood still”. We better shape up, who knows when the aliens are going to come and eliminate us cause we’re destroying our planet? And Im sure when they do come they will go right after the movies stars for creating such a travesty on the silver screen.

More than half of the loss of landlocked ice in the past five years has occurred in Greenland . . .

And yet Greenland still isn't as warm and green as it was around 900 to 1300.

And if they didn’t tell us, we would never know it. That’s some crisis.

As a data point, the "2 trillion tons of ice melt"

And where did the ice come from to begin with?

All I want to know is how much has the ocean levels risen in the past 20 year as proof?

Our friends seawall down in Florida is the same distance off the water at high tide since it was put in, and that was back in the 50’s.

Looks like NASA’s looking for more funding from Obama. It’s very timely too. I scratch your back...

The Chicago area is now under a Winter Storm Watch. We're *supposed* to get from 4" to 12" of snow this afternoon. NASA can come pick it up tomorrow.

I'll even let them shovel my driveway.

Read some recent background on it here: The Accelerated Disintegration of Greenland's Glaciers Volume 9, Number 10: 8 March 2006
When actual measurements of the ice sheet via satellite radar altimetry are employed, quite a different perspective is obtained. Zwally et al. (2005), for example, found that although "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins," it is "growing inland with a small overall mass gain." In fact, for the 11-year period 1992-2003, Johannessen et al. (2005) found that "below 1500 meters, the elevation-change rate is -2.0 ± 0.9 cm/year, in qualitative agreement with reported thinning in the ice-sheet margins," but that "an increase of 6.4 ± 0.2 cm/year is found in the vast interior areas above 1500 meters." Spatially averaged over the bulk of the ice sheet, the net result, according to the latter researchers, was a mean increase of 5.4 ± 0.2 cm/year, "or ~60 cm over 11 years, or ~54 cm when corrected for isostatic uplift."

Consequently, and in direct contradiction of the claim of Rignot and Kanagaratnam, Greenland has experienced no "ice sheet mass deficit in the last decade." Quite to the contrary, it has been host to a net accumulation of ice, which Zwally et al. find to be "contributing -0.03 ± 0.01 mm a-1 to sea-level change." As a result, the net accretion of ice on Greenland over the past decade has actually been ever so slightly lowering global sea level.

http://www.medindia.net/news/Volcano-Deep-Down-Could-Be-Melting-Greenlands-Ice-30702-1.htm

Thinning of the crust (hot magma may the the real reason, but then again NASA doesn’t to USGS work.
