Attorney Says Case Against Blago 'Significantly Exaggerated'

December 15, 2008 1:32 PM

ABC News' Matthew Jaffe reports from Chicago: Chicago defense attorney Ed Genson, who met with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich twice this weekend and who expects to be retained today, said that the case against the governor is "significantly exaggerated" and if he is retained, they will fight the charges.

"It's like a snowball running down the hill and it's gotten really really large. It's an avalanche now," Genson told reporters as he arrived at work Monday morning. "And... I think the case, the case that I've seen so far is significantly exaggerated. It's just, it's not what people think it is."

Genson met with Blagojevich for much of Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the lawyer's downtown Chicago offices.

Warned the attorney today, "If I'm trying the case, it's going to be a fight."

"Impeachment and criminal proceedings?" asked a reporter.

"Impeachment and criminal proceedings," Genson replied.

Genson said he expects to know this afternoon if he will take on the governor's case, but first he has to make sure there are no conflicts.

"I have conflicts and I have to talk with the other people and other potential clients and people who I've been retained for over the years, make certain that the conflicts are something that's, that doesn't prevent me from properly representing him," Genson said.

Let’s not jump to conclusions...let’s let Blagojevich himself come clean with everyone. We all want to know.

I don’t think there is a case here. At worst he told Obama to go eff himself.

There is a moral crime here. But these are Democrats. To them it is a badge of honor.

As 99% of Americans ignore this story, everyone KNOWS that he is not guilty, was set up, was Bush's fault, someone lied and someone must have died. The Blog-O is just not guilty. HE IS A DIMOCRAT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, thus is not guilty because we ALL KNOW that Dimocrats do not lie, cheat, steal, scheme, murder, rape, pillage, mislead, dilly or dally. We KNOW they are all HONEST!!! /massive sarcastic sarcasm on

Excellent indeed. Lets not allow Blagojevich be scapegoated to protect Obama.

You mean Blagojevich.

I don’t have hope this will bring down Obama, but my glimmer lies in Daley. I want Blago to fight so he can take down Daley.

We all know the prosecution pulled the trigger before any serious crime was committed here. I can only speculate regarding why the rush to shut things down, but my own opinion is that someone on that list of candidates was being protected by stopping this fiasco BEFORE any two parties agreed to a deal.

All they have on Blago (at least related to the Senate seat) is TALKING about possible deals..... very minor compared to what they'd have had if they waited till they had an actual deal on tape.

Think about the typical drug bust or spying case or RICO charges.... you have the parties on a wire and you wait until money changes hand, till a deal is sealed. Then you rush in and bust both parties to the deal and for a much more serious crime.

This has smelled to heaven from the beginning, but not for the reasons everyone else in the media is going on about. There's no excuse for why this deal was not allowed to happen and THEN bust both parties.

So ask yourself, who is being protected?

What do you want to bet that he will not end up being Blago’s attorney? The ‘conflicts’ part is a bit strange. Shouldn’t he have explored those before he met with Blago?

I think he was sent there by someone else to gather info or relay a message to Blago from the O Team.
