THE BUYERS: Straw purchasers in the U.S. profit from murder in Mexico
San Antonio Express-News ^ | 12/15/2008 | Guillermo Contreras

The young Mexican national looked over the table at a San Antonio taquería and nonchalantly described the firepower that passed through his hands as if he were describing the trowel he now uses to lay bricks.

Heckler & Koch MP5s. Colt AR-15s. M16s. Berettas. Barrett sniper rifles.

“To kill people, hurt people, we use them as a tool for kidnap and for escort drugs,” the former Mexican drug cartel foot soldier, who previously served in the Mexican army, said in broken English. “That was the use ... that we gave to the weapons.”

THE SELLERS: Gun merchants caught between profit and conscience To arm themselves, Mexican cartels pick guns like they would choose toys from a catalog and tap the plentiful supply in the U.S.

Crucial to the flow of guns into Mexico, where they are largely illegal, are networks of straw buyers — U.S. citizens with clean criminal backgrounds who are bankrolled by the cartels to shop for guns. Some rings draw in ordinary people lured by easy money from near strangers. Others are more closely tied to cartels through “facilitators” who might oversee a network of buyers.

Texas, by far, leads the nation as the primary source of guns for the cartels.

FORUM: Do you think U.S. gun laws adequately address the problem of gun trafficking?

The former cartel foot soldier, for example, told the Express-News he got what he needed in Texas. He simply stated to the head of his 40-member cartel security unit — a feared paramilitary group known as the Zetas — what guns he wanted. The orders were passed to fellow cartel workers in charge of finding straw buyers who would be paid in cash or drugs.

“The people who was working here in the U.S. selling the drugs, they were the same that...

If only there were some sort of wall that would prevent this deadly, deadly traffic.

Oh well.

We’ll stop our guns from going south when we stop illegals from coming north.

It isn’t the gun laws that allow people to buy for Mexican crimes. It is the fact we don’t control our borders such that these illegals can cross, buy, and return.

I haven’t been across the border in years but doesn’t Mexico not check vehicles crossing into Mexico? Maybe the gun problems they have are theirs, not ours to solve.

Recently, Mexico has said they will check cars like the US does. We crossed a month ago at San Ysidro, they just waved us through.

Maybe if there was a fence along the border these terrible weapons wouldn’t be getting into Mexico.

Heckler & Koch MP5s and M16s are FULL AUTO machine guns! I am throwing the BS flag on this author. There may be straw purches of semi pistols and rifles, and that is Mexican border problem if they are entering there country. But, full auto firearms are so tightly regulated there is no way that Texas gun shows are the source!

Heckler & Koch MP5s.

Dear Mexican Drug Trafficers,

Can you please supply me with the name of someone I could buy a new H&K MP5 or M16 from? You see, as a law abiding American citizen, it's been illegal for me to buy these guns new since 1986. So if you'd just let me know how you're doing this, I'd really appreciate it, since I'd really love to have a new MP5. In fact, it would fit quite nicely under my Christmas tree.

Sincerely,

MarkL

It sounds like the guns need to be more evenly distributed. Give all the Mexicans an opportunity to defend themselves.

If they are getting full auto weapons, they are not getting them from texas. I’d more likely bet they are coming from much further south. Just more proof that gun control doesn’t work. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have full auto.

This drumbeat is becoming tiresome. I will not lose my 2nd amendment rights because a corrupt, failed state next door will benefit. My 2nd amendment rights are sacrosanct, not conditional upon how they affect Mexico.

The liberty tree is looking more parched by the day.

Also, if Mexico, Canada, and the USA are to be merged, as per Bush’s globalist plan, then firearms laws will have to be normed. Guess what the plan is? It AIN’T that Canucks and Mexicans will suddenly be free to own what they want. The Globalists want you to give up yours. When the border is officially removed, as within the EU, Mexican gun laws will be instantly meaningless if the USA retains our gun ownership rights. These stories are appearing on purpose.

BS flag is right. These aren't weapons you find at gun show bargin bins. Most likely they're diverted from Mexican military and law enforcement armories. That way, most come equipped with an operator trained by the Mexican govt. like our little friend in this article.

Gun shows? We don' need no steekeen gun shows!

Since the full auto weapons that they reference cannot be bought and sold by 99.99% of the gun dealers in this country... the rest of this article is suspect.
