Senate scandal snares Obama’s chief aide

For the “No Drama” Obama team, the spiralling controversy has been an alarming distraction in the midst of the US economic meltdown. Obama has yet to release a promised timeline of contacts between members of his transition team and the governor's office, while Emanuel is thought to be consulting lawyers.

*** Private telephone discussions between Emanuel and John Harris, Blagojevich’s chief of staff, began as early as the weekend before the November 4 election, the Chicago Tribune revealed yesterday. Emanuel let it be known that Valerie Jarrett, an Obama adviser, Tammy Duckworth, a wounded Iraq war veteran, and two other candidates would be “acceptable” to Obama.

*** Emanuel had further talks with the governor’s office after the election, during which he added another name to the list. It does not appear that Emanuel engaged in any illegal horse-trading - Blagojevich complained at one stage that all the president-elect’s team was offering was “appreciation”. “F*** them,” the governor said.

However, questions remain over what Emanuel said when and how much he know about the governor’s “pay to play” scheme. He may have been fully aware of what Blagojevich was attempting. At one stage the governor told an aide that he wanted an unnamed “president-elect adviser”, thought to be Emanuel, to help “raise 10, 15m” for a charitable group, which the governor could head.

Did Emanuel receive the news, and if so, how? Did he report his suspicion of illegal activity to the FBI or did he treat it just as a normal part of wheeler-dealing in the corrupt Windy City? And did he use the same four-letter language to discuss the succession in the same crude terms as Blagojevich?

Obama, Emanuel, Blago. All in cuffs and doing the “perp walk.” Now that’s what I call “the American dream!”

Maybe Rahm’s in trouble for dealing about the replacement for his Congressional seat, not about the replacement for O’s Senate seat:

“One alleged scheme outlined in the charges against Blagojevich involves the special election for Emanuel’s seat. The government affidavit said Blagojevich and others were recorded talking about an unnamed “president-elect adviser” concerned about the election for Emanuel’s congressional seat who might help the governor land a new job at a non-profit organization”

what a roaring start.

And didn't he have the strictest, most privacy invading job standards for his team?

obama's team players need to know that they are all potential flotsam and jetsam—debre to be blasted away from the mothership if the need should arise. clintonesque.

OR...

obama's team players need to know that they are all simply sponges to absorb any potential obama spills—to be disposed of when they become too putrid with the stench of obama-waste saturation.

“Senate scandal snares Obama’s chief aide”

British sensationalism. So far there’s nothing there.

...they are all simply sponges...

That's the best description of Rahm Emanuel I've read yet!

If I turn on my mental Obama voice synthesizer, I can just hear him somberly announcing how he “just became aware” that one of his “trusted aides” had been engaging in “conduct I do not agree with”...yada yada...and how “shocked and disappointed” he is...blah blah.

With the bottom line being, Rahm Emanuel is in fact going to be sweeping floors like his father quipped and not Chief of Staff after all.

He should be very cautious around buses also.

Yes Rahm’s congressional seat is very interesting. Wonder who Rahm was promoting for that?

For example, are there any Rahm Jr.s running around like Jesse Jr. or any others Rahm might want to favor?

Just heard on the radio that Blago’s new attorney has his office across the street from Obama headquarters.

He’s a high priced guy, and Blago is broke??

Only for the people who actually filled out the long form, not the ones who put it together. Just as Caligula did require his horse to sign a loyalty oath before he appointed it to the Roman Senate, Obama did not require the horse-part named Rahm to be honest.

Anything to keep this crew off balance is a plus IMHO.

IIRC the Clintoons had a few months in office before the manure started to show up on their shoes.

It’s good to see Obammy having to play defense 6 weeks before starting the job.

That would be “did NOT require”, if only spellcheck would test what I meant compared to what I typed.
