Mira Mesa was fine when I purchased my house there in 1983. The houses were 2 years old. My area was on the western edge of the developed area. By the time I sold in 2001, I was dead center. Graffiti all over the place. Drug deals. Drive by shootings. Home invasions. I was thrilled to get $242K from my initial $105K purchase and get out of dodge.

The house where I grew up in Chula Vista suffered the same fate. It's a dangerous place to be. My mom moved out to Rancho San Diego in 2005. Better, but not perfect. Given her age, it will be safe longer than she is likely to live.
