DSe Hybrid 12m: First Zero Emissions Yacht in America

Eco-friendly Yachts: The first production motor yacht with zero emissions will be unveiled at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at the end of October. The ship, the Island Pilot DSe Hybrid 12m, is powered by diesel fuel, solar energy, and electric power. The vessel is 12 meters long (39.5 feet) and can cruise at 13 knots on diesel fuel and 7 knots when in zero-emissions mode. A zero-emissions level is achieved with a 6 kW solar array and a 20 kWh battery bank. The yacht is the first-ever production motor yacht with zero emissions in America, according to Reuben Trane, president of Island Pilot, LLC.

"There are so many reasons this boat makes sense in today's environment," said Mr. Trane. "At a time with record high oil prices, we are bringing to market a product that will dramatically reduce the most visible expense of a recreational motor boat - the cost of diesel. The DSe's efficiency will make all the difference in the world when compared to other luxury yachts. Plus, she's ready for alternative fuels. The DSe's Steyr 'mono-block' engine runs equally well on bio-diesel [fuel]."

The trilogy of technologies deployed to power the luxury yacht are provided by Steyr Motors' Serial Hybrid Propulsion System, Outback Energy Solar's controllers and inverters, and Enersys' Odyssey Batteries. While the boat is anchored, enough solar energy can be produced to operate the boat's essentials sans running a fuel-consuming diesel generator. Designing the ship with adequate horizontal space to mount enough solar panels played a significant role in its development.

This nearly 40-foot long luxury watercraft is the most eco-friendly yacht of the lot. The introductory price of a DSe Hybrid 12m is $600,000; Island Pilot is currently taking orders. The first green yachts are expected to hit the water in early 2009.

Please tell me the rich folks aren't buying into this Global Warming crap. Or maybe this is a "fig leaf" to allow them to have a yacht and still be "green" and all that, like a Hybrid Lexus. I would think I could find a lot nicer boat for 600 large, though.

I’ve had a couple of boats that produced zero emissions: they were called sailboats. My trimaran could hit over 20 knots.

I hope they sell thousands of them. Flood the market with their trade-ins and we can some good used boats at bargain prices.

Maybe Al Gore will buy one to go with his “bio-solar” houseboat...

that IS ugly. If I had the money for a yacht, It would have to have more room for all my tanning groupies.

where’s the launching deck for the 2-stroke jet-skis ?

Free enterprise and it's their money let them spend it!!!

We have some really far out people here.

Get a grip, someone made a sizable chunk of change building this contraption. I have no problem with them making a living.

Hmmm...”zero emissions”...interesting! I wonder if they would care to explain the process of supplying batteries to PV (photo voltaic) systems and the process of disposing of them? Zero emissions my ass! :-)

Now you’re doing “show and Tell” to the MSM....but this isn’t a Yacht.

zero emission Yacht . . . is just a BIGGER version of the “Boat” shown.

The solar panels look like a couple of kites just waiting for a high wind. Be sure to have your Mae West on your body at all times.

The Nina, the Pinto and the Santa Maria were zero emissions SHIPS, never mind Yachts!

I’m pretty sure the Nina, Pinto and Santa Maria left a trail of flotsam and jetsam behind. There’s no such thing as a “zero emissions” boat or ship.

I am wondering what a hail storm would do to those solar panels. Do they get hail out on the ocean?

I expected the headline to lead to an article about a sexy sailboat. And it turns out to be a top heavy barge.

So,,, electical controllers, inverters, batteries, and solar panels no longer require energy consuming factories and laborers to design and build. What a bunch of IDIOTs!
