WOODSTOCK The Town Board is considering acting locally while thinking globally. Specifically, members are discussing whether to try to prohibit the local manufacture of parts used for military equipment.
The concern arises from the fact that Ametek Rotron Inc. has a manufacturing operation on Hasbrouck Lane in Woodstock, and a letter submitted to the Town Board by 14 local residents notes the company makes parts for helicopters, rocket launchers, tanks and armored personnel carriers.
Rotrons Web site confirms the company manufactures those parts, but it does not say which, if any, are made at its Woodstock plant. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
Councilwoman Liz Simonson, agreeing with the residents letter, suggested town officials ask the company for a list of items it manufactures in Woodstock.
For a town that prides itself on trying to create a zoning law that protects the environment, I can sort of see that the environment has a global scale, Simonson said. Were protecting our own little hub of livelihood here, but it doesnt speak well of us to say well protect our own resources from degradation but well manufacturer things that we can ship to other parts of the world (that will) destroy other parts of the world.
I like the idea of trying to start a dialogue, Simonson added. I dont want to be the person who says, No, we dont want you here because youre making this, but to make them understand that perhaps people of Woodstock dont want to be shipping these things to the rest of the world so we can destroy their environment while we sit in a nice little tidy place and protect our own.
The letter signed by the 14 town residents said: Wed like to know exactly what weapons systems have components that are made in Woodstock. We believe that the people of Woodstock can and should work together with local business people and the town government to create a local economy that is sustainable and ethical.
The letter said studies conducted by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts show conversion from military to peaceful production can be done without jeopardizing jobs.
Otherwise Woodstock is not meeting it community obligation to provide for our common defense.
No troops should have to die for the ungrateful.
you’re last line is a keeper. nufsed
Sad little pee spot in the snow that woodstock is...
Just amazing. Yes, good idea — let these anti-American, anti-defense slobbering leftists wallow in their own excrement. Let THEM defend themselves...
Words fail me. Should I ever hear of a disaster befalling this place, my ears will turn elsewhere.
On the other hand, what percentage of the total population of the Woodstock area do these 14 malcontents represent? Maybe they should be the ones shown the way out of town...
This matches up with the Democratic policy of settling disputes with a game of “Rock, Paper, and Scissors.”
The owners of this company should contact other businesses in town that they and their employees do business with, and let them know the price tag of the city fathers fantasy world, if they pull up stakes.
Then, they should offer employees strong incentives to run for local office against said city fathers, with campaigns fully endowed and supported by the business. Those employees will be paid to campaign full-time for the next elections.
Then they should discuss the matter with their legal department, and entertain possible litigation that may be made against the city, beyond the cities ability to pay. Be sure to entice the lawyers with a lot of chum.
Finally, they should discuss limited partnerships with other defense contractors, to bring them to this town.
Only in the US. Even European countries get overbearing when you screw with what they perceive to be their best interests (e.g., the Froggies and Greenpeace).
We culture people like this like I cultured bacteria in biology classes. And now that I think of it, they are a lot like many bacteria. Parasites of a sort with no redeeming social value that make you sick.
They couldn’t exist without others to do their dirty work for them.
This thread should have a warning:
“This is NOT satire.!”
Just friggin unbelievable!
Do they have sheriffs or local police? Surely their weapons should not be allowed. The Woodstock police should carry bows and arrows and wear tin foil hats with peace symbols on them.
Lets see how long that works. After all Woodstock law and order forces should not import weaponry from other cities or states!
Good thing Upstate New York economy is booming so other companies will easily fill in the gaps...

LOL. 14 residents and the town is up in arms?? What about the rest of the townsolf? I’m guessing they number more than 14 and represent the true feelings of the population.

Sheep.
Indeed. Why waste energy caring about people too stupid to care about themselves.
These people are sick, but hey, they are Progressives, and they just got elected to run the country. Expect more this, imposed on an economy near you.
Woodstock can rot in hell with the artsy-fartsy, washed-up hippy crowd.
