December 12, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Amidst an ongoing debate among prolife advocates about whether to classify the Pill as an abortifacient or a prophylactic, pro-abortion advocates have published an authoritative statement declaring that the Pill prevents implantation of embryos, thereby causing an abortion.
In a supplement to its November 2008 issue, top reproductive health journal Fertility and Sterility published the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) statement, Hormonal contraception: recent advances and controversies.
In a summary of the development of contraception in the United States the statement called oral contraceptives the most widely used reversible method. In the wide variety of oral contraceptives that are available, the mechanisms of action are the same, said the statement: inhibition of ovulation, alteration in the cervical mucus, and/or modification of the endometrium, thus preventing implantation.
Pro-life advocates who oppose abortion, but not contraception, have long considered the Pill as an ethical contraceptive option, as opposed to the IUD, which causes abortions by preventing implantation. However, the statement by the ASRM clearly indicates that the pill is medically classified as a drug that acts by preventing implantation, thereby causing the death of a fertilized embryo a unique and living human being.
A large body of literature supports this statement, including articles from Fertility and Sterility. The most significant of these is a 1996 study by a group of OB/GYNs from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, that concluded that impaired uterine receptivity is one mechanism by which OCs exert their contraceptive actions

ONE NATION UNDER GOD
This isn’t even close to being an accurate headline. This is an “old” debate, as it were, and the statement released has been known scientific fact for quite some time.
It would be more accurate to say that oral contraceptives CAN cause abortions, but only if:
1) The woman has sex during a fertile period (generally no more than five days per month);
2) The pill fails to prevent ovulation;
3) The pill fails to prevent fertilization through thickening of the cervical mucus;
4) The pill succeeds in preventing the fertilized egg from being implanted in the uterine wall.
Since it’s known that oral contraceptives are NOT 100% effective even when used “properly,” it is quite difficult to say how often the above unlikely sequence of events occurs.
WOW.
I am actually glad I didn’t use the pill.
were I to ever use the pill, I would have had tons of abortions. I got pregnant if I happened to touch his underwear much less anything else. I hope this gets out to the mainstream, which it won’t. Every time I tell somebody this, they say no way its not true, if it were the doctors would tell us or it would be on the news. It is only old news to pro lifers I assure you.
The best form of birth control is a tall glass of cold water...

Shudda read ‘is to have’’...

How many couples would think twice if they knew?
Almost none would. And a conservative movement that attempts to ban this form of contraception would be destroyed in the polls. It would be (correctly) characterized as theocracy.
...The beauty of the Catholic Church is that the Truth it teaches is the same whether in fashion or not.
Without the Magisterium, guided by the Holy Spirit, you invariably end up with the Culture of Death being readily accepted.....some will call good evil and evil good.
Yep, let’s legislate Catholic theology into law. That will work our just fine. NOT. So-called conservatives who advocate this position should be tossed out of the movement. Simply put, conservatives either agree that personal religious differences are going to exist, should not be legislated or they can lose every election in site. They’ll be right with God, great, but God isn’t asking for a country’s laws to be godly, only your behavior.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment
Obama: If they make a mistake, I dont want them punished with a baby.
That was a pretty ridiculous and non-nonsensical rant.
That is the political truth. Like it or not. Americans are not going to follow the Vatican’s line on contraception and any party that attempts to make that their policy will lose miserably. Like it or not.
From a political angle it's true that it's a loosing case. The vast majority of Americans use the pill and would destroy any party that would propose stopping it—even if it was universally understood that it can cause abortion.
And that's the bleak truth.
Wow! Herman_the_Cherusker was right. I’m sure glad my opposition to contraception and understanding the health risks and other complications of taking the pill, prevented me from ever using it.
Most Catholics don’t follow or agree with the Vatican’s stand against contraception, let alone most Americans. And most of us well understand that.
Please read reply #17. I said the same thing.

While abortion is equally wrong at any stage in pregnancy, including from the first second, the task of making people understand that abortion obtained in abortion clinics is killing and egregiously wrong is great enough for now, without attempting to convince people that abortions resulting from the pill are also wrong.
But someday, after abortion in clinics becomes illegal, people will realize abortions resulting from pills, are also wrong.
