Senate Democrats Had Enough Republican Votes to Pass the Bailout
JAWA Report ^ | December 12, 2008 03:46 PM | Stable Hand

The UAW complained the GOP halted the bailout plan. One little known fact is Democrats had enough Republicans on their side to pass the bailout.

It didn't pass because the entire Democartic caucus didn't vote.

Eight Democrats bailed on the bailout (Reid, it should be noted, voted against it for procedural reasons, in order to bring it up for a vote again).

Four Democrats voted 'nay': Baucus, Tester, Lincoln, and Reid.

Four Democrats did not vote: Biden, Kennedy, Kerry, and Wyden.

From the New Republic:

Panic in Detroit

***************************EXCERPT****************************

by
This is not your father's Oldsmobile we're rescuing.
Post Date Friday, November 14, 2008

General Motors has come to Washington, begging for a $25 billion bailout to keep it and its ailing Detroit counterparts going next year. But nobody seems too thrilled about the prospect. Liberals dwell on the companies' gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles. Conservatives obsess over all the well-paid union members with gold-plated benefits. And people of all ideological backgrounds remember how they used to buy domestic cars, years ago, but stopped because the cars were so damn lousy. "The downfall of the American auto industry is indeed a tragedy," the Washington Post editorial board sermonized recently, "but the automakers and the United Auto Workers have only themselves to blame for much of it." And, if they have only themselves to blame, the argument goes, why do they deserve taxpayer help? Let them fail and file for bankruptcy. In the long run, the economy will be stronger and the workers better off. It'd be worth?the short-term pain, which might not even be so severe.

In normal times, with another company, that might be correct. But these are not normal times, just as GM is not any old company. Nor is the simple economic morality tale everybody repeats about the auto industry accurate. Detroit has come a long way since the days of wide lapels and disco. GM, Ford, and Chrysler are taking precisely the sorts of steps everybody says are necessary--or, at least, they were taking those steps until an unexpected trifecta of high gas prices, vanishing credit, and a deep recession hit. Rescuing the auto industry is not, as so many people suppose, a question of giving Detroit one extra shot at transformation. It's a question of giving Detroit a chance to finish a transformation that was already underway.

dems didnt want it to pass cuz they knew gw would give them some tarp money. i got this funny feeling that gw cut some deal with obama and dems to leave him alone once he leaves office. no other way to describe bush’s actions over the last 6 months. now the dems can get a even more socialized project if zero actually does become president(holding out hope about bc thing sorry)

Maybe they ought to try making a car that will sell, and they wouldn’t be in this mess.

Exactly. Who cares what the UAW. The UAW and its allies regularly spend hundreds of millions to defeat Republicans every election, as well as provide grassroots thugs for the Democrats. Of course they’re gonna blame the bailout collapse on the GOP. The Republicans should not care a whit about what the UAW says about them. The UAW is not the Republicans friend - it never has been and never will be.

Virtually all unions are activist RAT organizations based on Marxist principles. Any RINOs that supported them should be made to pay.

The RAT unions have made the Republicans (and the private sector) the enemy for decades. Supporting socialists, union thugs "paid volunteers" working on campaigns. Now they can reap what they have sown.

If the R's have killed their jobs, I'd tell them to wear it with pride.

Let's see the Big Three create some good paying non-union jobs in their place.

They’re obsessed! with bi-Partisanship, and trying to get political advantage to blame Republicans (never mind this stoppage is a good thing), it’s all about POWER folks, not helping the little guy or anyone really..! (Except their buddies to more $free), it’s pathetic.

It really is amazing to watch...

Dubya, with nothing to lose, he's not running again, his legacy will be written by liberals who hate him.....so why not go on t.v. hold up a poster board with the vote on it and crack some nuts!

Go out fighting instead of rolling over and limp wristedly giving them what they want while shouldering the blame.

Honestly he ( dubya ) looks like some damned abused wife still making excuses .
