I may be getting the Nissan plant confused with another one that was originally run by one of the Big Three and later taken over by a Japanese manufacturer.

Didn't Chevy Nova's eventually get produced as Chevy Nova's and also as Toyota Corolla. They couldn't sell the Nova's because of the name but they couldn't build the Corolla fast enough even though they were the same car, just different grill and name and cost more. Eventually they dropped the Nova's or something like that. I may be wrong about the models but you get the point, the time period would of probably been in the mid or early 80’s.
