After 15 years on KABC-AM (790) in Los Angeles, afternoon drive host Larry Elder told his listeners on Thursday that Friday will be his last day. Elder said We've been together in joy & sorrow. Good economies & bad. So its with sadness I must tell you that KABC management & I have decided that (Friday) will be my last broadcast on KABC. Elder left a message on his website, but did not release any details. KABC announced that Al Rantel will take over afternoon drive (3-7pm), followed by the syndicated Curtis Sliwa from 7-10pm local time, the syndicated Mark Levin, and a repeat of Sliwa at midnight.
>> A “firebrand libertarian” according to “Daily Variety,” best-selling author and radio talk-show host Larry Elder has a take-no-prisoners style, using such old-fashioned things as evidence and logic. Larry shines the bright light of reasoned analysis on many
of the myths and hypocrisies apparent in our system of government, our society, and the media itself. He slays dragons and topples sacred cows using facts, common sense and a ready wit.
>>Larry Elder was a broadcaster on KABC Talk Radio in Los Angeles from March, 1994 until December 12, 2008 hosting “The Larry Elder Show,” a top-rated daily program from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (PT) on KABC 790, and began a nationally syndicated daily talk show for ABC Radio Networks on August 12, 2002. Known to his listeners as the “Sage From South Central,” Larry sizzles on the airwaves with his thoughtful insight on the days most provocative issues, to the delight, consternation, and entertainment of his listeners. The “Sage” engages political and cultural leaders in meaningful debates over race, government, personal responsibility and education that have elevated the talk radio genre. A blend of fiscal conservative and social liberalwith attitudeElders libertarian views have fueled controversy and made him one of the most in-demand radio personalities in the country. In May, 2003, Elder shifted his political party registration from “Decline to State” (which, in California, means independent) to the Republican Party. He continues to support the libertarian principles of limited government and maximum personal and financial responsibility.
Oh dear, Al Rantel, has gone off the deep end. Larry will be missed.
I am sure Larry will be back on some station soon.
Can you imagine anyone being a court transcriber for that guy??!!
Larry Elder is a learned man and a great citizen of this great experiment.
Prior to yesterday, there were only two reasons to listen to KABC - the Dodgers, and Larry Elder.
Now there is only one - the Dodgers, and more specific than that, Vin Scully (for three innings).
Al Rantel for four hours? Bawney Fwank’s soul sister? Are you KIDDING me?
The only good thing about that lineup is Levin, and I usually listen to him on podcast.
All the best to the “Sage”.

Larry Elders last day at talk KABC, Los Angeles is today.
He says management and I have decided that [today] will be my last broadcast on KABC (790) and thats a significant change in the lineup at the Citadel station. Somebody told me recently to expect changes at KABC, with some more syndication. Some of that arrived recently in the form of New York-based Curtis Sliwa. Starting Monday, Curtis begins a whole evening block of syndication at KABC, when he does 7-10 (live), followed by New York-based Mark Levin (tape). Then at midnight, theres a repeat of Sliwa. So KABCs last local talkshow of the day will be Al Rantel, whos assuming Larry Elders 3-7pm slot. Cost-cutting? Sure sounds like it. Rival KFIs going to have a little fun with this, too.
Years ago, I worked with a German gal whose first name was "Gerlinde" (she went by Linda, of course), and she adored Larry.....so I sent a fax to KABC requesting an autographed pic addressed to Gerlinde.
Shortly thereafter I answered the office phone and it was Larry...asking what the deal was with a "Gerlinde", thinking maybe he was being tricked.
I told him no, and put Linda on the line....they chatted for close to five minutes. She was absolutely thrilled by it all, and got her picture a couple of days later.
It took me about two weeks of listening to Al Rantel and Doug McIntyre to figure out that they call themselves "conservatives" with little idea of what being a conservative entails, and they neither of them are eloquent describers and defenders of limited government principle, which to me is the heart of conservatism. Larry may have been off on some issues, but he was consistent in principle for LESS GOVERNMENT no matter whose government. A lot of so-called "conservatives" don't get that concept at all. Government intrusion is fine with them as long as they're in charge.
McIntyre, Rantel, and others mislabel themselves "conservative" because it's the only label they can come up with for moderates who agree only 50 or 60 percent of the time with Liberals.
KABC program managers are stupid. I assumed the only reason they were getting rid of Larry was to make room for Levin. But for Al Rantel ...????? That's like replacing steak with hamburger and thinking people are going to be happy about it.
I am completely disgusted. Now there really are ZERO decent options in that time slot of 3 - 7 in all of LA radio. Hugh Hewitt vs. Al Rantel vs. John n Ken. Piss poor pickin's of moderates and liberals.
Didn’t Rantel and McCintyre vote for the Big O, much to the Sage’s chagrin and dismay?
This is such horrible news. Larry IS the best! He should have many opportunities in future and I hope we all get to hear him again soon.
Al Rantel and the current morning guy are poor substitutes and I will not likely be listening to that radio station anymore.
I’m going to have to go back to Hugh Hewitt, though he puts me to sleep much of the time.
John and Ken are pretty good guys when they stick to state and local politics.
They are pretty clueless when it comes to national or global issues, but even then they are at least interesting. I can't say the same for Hugh Hewitt, who endangers my life every time I drive home when I'm tired.
Elder will be back on within a month somewhere. Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll take the Hugh Hewitt spot on Salem.
Larry Elder had Larry King close to apoplexy over Blago & BHO on Tuesday night.
“Larry Elder had Larry King close to apoplexy over Blago & BHO on Tuesday night.”
LOL
I’m really sorry to hear about Larry going off the air! He is badly needed on our side. I hope he will get a new contract very soon and be back to educating the masses. Wouldn’t it be nice if FoxNewsChannel would offer him a spot on t.v.?
