U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Phoenix) is opposed to the bill passed by the House Wednesday night, a McCain spokeswoman told PolitickerAZ.com Thursday.
"The senator is opposed to the bill as it is written," said Leah Geach of McCain's Washington, D.C. office. She said she didn't have any further details to offer at present.

People running for higher office should resign their current one.
I guess that ended with Bob Dole.
What a dumbass.
Opposed to it as is, but not against a bailout at all.
Which I guess for Maverick is improvement but still supporting any bailout is wrong yet I suspect th GOP intends to do just that so long as Corker’s bill gets some acceptance from the Democrat’s.
Oh NOW he doesn’t want a bailout, where the hell was he when that bank bailout passed, oh yeah I remember, he voted YES on it. What a buffoon
No, GWB didn’t ruin his chances. McCain has opposed Bush plenty of times in the past and certainly could have done so again.
McCain embraced that bailout because it’s what he does despite his talk of being a Maverick, a reformer and fiscally conservative. He embraced it because it was a plan the Democrat’s and moderates crafted and it’s his way to side with them more then not.
He screwed himself.
What an idiot.
Oppose one that might affect a large majority of people, or one that bails out the idiots that got us into this mess.
Common sense is oppose both, but I swear the GOP is trying to kill itself off.
That’s exactly what they are up to.
They want to claim they made it better and assure their constituent’s they can stand united against the Democrat’s. They know as the Democrat’s know the people don’t want this. And they know their base is already furious at them.
Well forget it. Support the bailout AT ALL and just again prove they have learned nothing and deserve nothing but contempt. There is no middle ground here and I will not be appeased by a few middling changes in the legislation. The Democrat’s are going to pass it anyway so they don’t need Republican votes. This is now about principle since the reality is we don’t have the votes to stop it, and the GOP has no principle with a few notable exceptions in their body.
THAT is all you need to know.
I almost did that, but then McQueeg stopped his campaign to prance about pretending to do something about the financial crisis while voting for a $700B Socialist pork festival.
I agree with all your points . He tried the “not a republican” theme in September and it tanked.
Can you imagine GWB calling McCain and telling him, “I got really bad news John. Remember a few months ago when I told you “the fundamentals of the economy are strong’ as Obama is using in his ad? Well I am SO SORRY, I have to tell the people we are on the brink of a great depression. I know this is really bad for you, but we can turn this around, if you can lead MY and Pelosi’s rescue package, you will be a hero and win in a landslide. But of the bailout goes down, we all go down with the economy. Have I ever let you down??”
LOL. Good thing I always hated McCain or this would bother me.
I doubt it. He's a liberal. Remember, he did not support the bill "as written". I wouldn't be surprised if he thought there should be more money, or something tied to "green" technology.
McCain learned a lot about conservatives during the campaign, didn’t he?
You mean he didnt suspend his campaign to go back and save it???
Something I have learned with McCain is if he does or says something you like, do not celebrate, because in 3 or 4 days everything will change.
Yup.
McCain is nuts.
All he had to do was grow a pair and vote AGAINST the $700 bailout, like most of the country wanted, and his poll numbers woulda gone up before the elections. But oh no! McCain had to act in his typical nonsensical manner again.
NOW! Ichabod McCrane wakes up. :-(
But he will still vote for it!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...A disgrace . Sold his soul to the devil . Rat .
