Bankruptcy Before Bailouts [DeMint]
National Review ^ | 2008-12-11

The House passed a $14-billion, stopgap bailout of the automotive industry on Wednesday night. But in the Senate, Republicans have the votes to prevent it. And despite urging from the exiting Bush administration, they appear poised to do so.

This is big. Normally, lame-duck congresses concern themselves with far less consequential matters. The addition of seven or eight more Democrats in the next Congress may come weeks too late to prevent the bankruptcy (or, in the worst case, failure) of General Motors.

In the hours leading up to the critical votes, NRO spoke with Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.), a staunch opponent of the bailout.

Well that’s a start.

Pity it takes being in the minority for Republicans to find their balls. Especially when going against this kind of socialist economic policy.

I’ve supported Bush through most of his tenure, but this bailout and what it entails have soured me towards him.

I guess its a good thing that a lot of rinos have been cleaned out. I hope the Republicans stand fast in the next couple of years.

I am wondering if conservative democrats in House voted for it knowing that GWB would give them cover, another republican bill. If so, hopefully they will break rank in next congress, Unfortunately we wont have the filibuster power we had the past two years, thanks GWB/McCain for the screwing!

Well, I think Sen. DeMint is going to be very disappointed tonight. AP is reporting a “tentative agreement” has been reached by a “bipartisan” group of senators. The fix is in.

RE ”Normally, lame-duck congresses concern themselves with far less consequential matters. “

I predicted this. why? Because republicans walked the plank for GWB on the first bailout,(not the first time they were setup) and way too late figured out he means them NO good. And Why would republicans who lost their seats after taking direction from GWB to join Obama/Pelosi on other bill for their last act, to vote for this? I hope they spit in Cheney's face when he came down to strong arm them, Goodbye GWB, you just HAD to strike again!

Reading further, this is really well-put. Here’s a gem, think of GWB when you read it, and his buddies the democrats:

Because the auto industry is so big, they’re saying we have to change our laws and do something special. But the government shouldn’t do it. And the fact is, they can’t do it. We can’t even run what we have to do now; the idea that we’re going to have a “car czar” who is going to help run the auto industry is so ridiculous that it’s hard to believe people are taking it seriously.”

Jim's response to the whinning socialists that wail how horrible it will be if the auto comapnies file bankruptcy:
Americans have come to know that airlines — and a lot of other companies — have gone through the bankruptcy process and come out the other side. I think frankly they’d have more confidence buying a General Motors product if they knew they were going through a bankruptcy process than if they’re being propped up by the federal government. . . . These companies are businesses. They are not government agencies.
...
There are some good alternatives to this. Any government help should follow the filing of bankruptcy, which would give bankruptcy judges the authority to tell the creditors, here’s what you’re going to get, tell the unions, here’s what you’re going to get, and here’s what we have to do to protect the jobs in the long term.

It’s dead. The yankees wouldn’t accept pay cuts. They must not want to work that badly.

Why should northern workers be paid better than southern workers if their companies have to go hat in hand begging for money? I mean come on. Pride before the fall.

Yesterday DeMint said if these bailouts don’t stop we will have riots.

I guess he has his ear to the ground.
