Tesla says federal loans needed for Model $ sedan

After yesterday's good news regarding delivery of the 100th Tesla Roadster, it's back to number-crunching reality. Tesla CEO Elon Musk told the Detroit Free Press that if the electric car maker doesn't get a $350 million loan from the government, then the Model S will be delayed and San Jose plant won't open. Just two weeks ago, Tesla opposed the Big Three getting any bailout money from the government. So, Musk's statement may seem contradictory, but it's not. We just need to look at the details.

Tesla's Vice President of Business Development, Diarmuid O'Connell, blogged about how it was a bad idea for the Big Three to get money that had been set aside in the December 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), specifically Section 136. Section 136 set up the Advanced Technology Vehicles Loan Program (ATVMLP), and Tesla opposed taking money that was supposed to make cars cleaner and instead use it to just keep the Big Three operating. Now, Tesla is asking for some of those Section 136 green car funds, something that the New York Times columnist Randall Stross doesn't want. Musk said that if the government shells out the $350 million, Tesla could sell 20,000 electric sedans a year by 2011.

Why should Tesla get a nickel? This is what happens when you let politicians finance their favorite boondoggles. Tesla could get money from Blagojevich for a “contribution”.

As far as I’m concerned, let Tesla Motors have the entire 15 billion. Hopefully they won’t be back in a few months asking for more.

Tesla.

Didn’t he have a little dispute with Thomas Edison over whether the electric power grid should be Alternating Current or Direct Current?

Good thing he won, I think.

I have this plan for a 135 mpg full sized car that only costs $7300 to buy. Please send $823 million to me, and I will work on it.

$350,0000,000 for 20,000 cars? That’s $17,500 subsidy for each car.

Note that Tezla has gone through $20,000,000 in deposits by customers for cars not built yet.

When Tezla goes under all these customers are out their deposits.

NO MORE Taxpayer $$’ to amyone! Just a few weeks ago the Tesla genius were saying they unlike the little 3 don’t need a taxpayer bailout, what changed. Tesla doen’t appear to have anything new that will work at anywhere close to the $ price required.

I guess they can’t get any more money from CA..since the state is broke. Why can’t they get some more private investors? It must be a good investment...they could leverage the investment. There is a lot of money sitting on the sidelines out there.

This is a niche sports car for wealthy people. Let’s see - Ford has it’s diesel European Fiesta that gets 60+ mpg. The car cannot be priced competiively enough to sell by probably $4,000. If Ford gave a govt tax credit of $4,000 they could sell 87,500 Fiesta.

Tesla can hit up theere billionaire Silicon Valley investors like the Google boys and all the Sand Hill Road venture capital investors in Palo Alto. The Google boys Brin & Page invested in this as well as eBay’s Jeff Skoll plus SillyCON Valley VC firms.

Taxpayers are supposed to bailout multi-billionaires? What a joke.
