Left-lane slowpokes drive you crazy? (Some states are cracking down.)
MSN Money ^ | 12/10/2008 | Christopher Solomon

In these days of longer commutes and simmering tempers, nothing seems to set off already-testy motorists like the left-lane camper -- the guy or gal who drives in the passing lane and bars faster drivers from easily passing. Web sites have cropped up to educate other drivers, or to vent. There's a (somewhat painful) YouTube song called "Keep Right."

Even bigwigs get frustrated. Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell, weary of having his limo slowed down by such left-lane pokies, ordered an aide to have the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission install signs a few years ago reading "Keep Right, Pass Left. It's the Law."

And now some states are cracking down on left-lane campers, both to keep traffic moving and to tamp down the road rage that goes from zero-to-60 faster than ever before.

That's not just a pretext. Last year, a driver was arrested on Interstate 79 outside Pittsburgh after allegedly brandishing a semiautomatic pistol at a driver who was on his tail.

That’s because they heard over their radios that the Dunkin’s at the next exit had a special on crullers.........

I was making a right turn onto the highway. There were two cars pulling into the right turn lane so I pulled out. Suddenly, a car is in my rear view mirror. The second car had realized that the first car was getting off the highway and whipped back onto the highway. I pulled off onto the shoulder because the car showed no sign of slowing and was going to rear-end me. The car passed me and got two car lengths ahead when the driver suddenly realized that something had happened. She slammed on the brakes and fishtailed all over the road. Luckily I was way behind her by then and on the shoulder.

I bet she almost dropped her cell phone when she did it. She did the same thing at the next exit. Followed a car onto the exit and then whipped back onto the highway. Still yakking on that phone.

HAH! I’m glad I’m not the only one who does that!

I was driving at night on the VFW Pkwy in Boston and passed a car going 30 in the left lane by going 40. He then speeded up to 44 and I saw where this was going. I also knew that a 1/4 mile ahead was a rotary, so I speed up to 50 and sure enough he goosed it to 55. That’s when I dropped down to 25 to take the rotary and glanced left to see him hit the rotary embankment of 8 inches of granite and bounce to a stop 25 feet inside the rotary park.

Heh, heh... Did you see any serious accidents involving a cop up the road?

Apparently ‘that one’ only knew how to play chicken on video games.

It’s scary when that happens on the road, especially at night - You, fortunately, did Good!

Amen, sister. On the 65 mph interstates I drive on in NJ, NY, PA, MD and VA, I set the cruise control (conditions permitting) to 75 mph. I have NEVER gotten trooper stopped for that speed, and I have driven right through radar many times.

But I just love it when someone passes me going 85...THAT will flush out the troopers!

>>And they decide to teach YOU a lesson. How did we get to the place where Americans want to keep other Americans from simply driving a little faster than them?<<

Oh, they’ve tried.

I’ve had guys slam on the brakes, slow down, you name it. Last guy got frazzled because the slower he went, the closer I got. He would tap brakes, I would tap, but then move in. He finally sped up. This was just on a simple surface street though. No high speeds. I must have been a foot off his bumper before he gave up. The guy was driving like a jerk long before I got near him, btw.

Nobody REALLY wants to get rear ended and even if they do, I’m old and I have insurance, and a perfect driving record. And nothing “officially” that they can attach in a lawsuit.

I have a friend that will tap the rear bumper of the car in front of him. It has to ramp up to that point though...

Does he wear a kevlar vest?

I don’t know what it is with some people. I’m cruising down the highway, cruise control set at 114 (km/h) and come up on a car, so I pull into the left lane and pass, and then back into the right. Next thing I know, they (she, actually) comes by me and pulls back in front of me, and again ends up gong slower than me again. So I pass her again, and again she passes me, pulls back in front, and slows down again. This goes on a couple more times until I finally get fed up, pull out, pass her at 150 and hold it for a minute or so until she’s well behind me, and then slow back down to my original 114 km/h. Never see her again after that, so what the heck was that all about? I drive to get places, not to play games. I pick a speed and stick with it, conditions permitting. I had the same experience another time on my bike, and again had to wick it up for a couple of miles to leave them well behind before I could drop back to my original speed (chosen to minimize the chances of attracting unwanted attention from police AND my travel time) to shake them off.

There was an article a year or so ago about people in some states simply refusing to pay these and the company had no recourse since there is no way of enforcing payment.

Operative words were “some states”.

I think they are like parking tickets. Since it is not a moving violation, the owner is simply responnsible for the ticket. If a friend was driving, the owner can take it up with them. Just like a parking ticket.

The best solution though is a close proximity application of an old tire filled with diesel to the camera.
