As far as literally creating the world in a matter of days, since God has been for all eternity, and will be for all eternity, I will let Him define what a day is, rather than try to interpret it for myself. In that since only, evolution and Biblical history can be compatible.

So, if a person told you something happened during a period called a day, and that period had a morning and an evening, and you later found out that the event really happened over the period of 3 weeks or 8 years, you would figure that was an accurate portrayal?

First, I already stated I would defer to Him to define what a day is, and what constitutes a morning and evening. For all I know Day 1 morning is the Big Bang and evening is the initial cooling period.

Secondly, and more important, those that try to parse and pick apart His Word for the purpose of trying to espouse either argument (for or against the literal 24 hour day creation) are missing the point of His gifts to us, and really need to focus on their own relationships rather than worry what others think.
