Chosenness and Its Enemies
Commentary Magazine ^ | December 2008 | Jon D. Levenson

Few religious doctrines have attracted more virulent criticism than the idea of the chosen people. Over the past several centuries alone, both Jews and non-Jews have judged this key tenet of classical Judaism to be undemocratic, chauvinistic, superstitious—in short, retrograde in every way that matters to the progressive mind.

Nor is it just progressives who have found it deficient. It, and Jews who still believe in it or otherwise decline to assimilate to prevailing norms, have been savaged by everyone from captains of capitalism to Soviet commissars. Henry Ford, to cite a famous example, sponsored the publication of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the notorious forgery originating in czarist Russia and alleging a Jewish plot to achieve global domination. Things have been no better on the other side of the political spectrum. The Soviet Union viciously persecuted the Jews, even issuing a book equating Zionism with racism and Nazism long before such moves became the hardy perennial of anti-Zionist invective.

Not to be outdone, President Charles de Gaulle of France, in a press conference not long after the Six-Day war of 1967, identified Jewish separateness not only as a reflection of the noxious character of the Jews themselves but as the cause of anti-Semitism in others. The Jews, de Gaulle observed, have long been “an elite people, self-confident and domineering”—and, presumably for that reason, guilty of “provoking ill will in certain countries and at certain times.”

And yet, like the Jews themselves, the idea of the chosen people will not die. Those drawn to it, moreover, are not always detractors. Last year, for example, the distinguished social critic Charles Murray published in COMMENTARY a much-discussed article in which he sought to explain what he called “the disproportionate Jewish accomplishment in the arts and sciences.”

If one is saved by grace then one is chosen. Anything else is salvation by works.

The idea of the "Chosen People" is NOT about superiority of any kind. It is that G-d chose the Jews for a mission. Greater spiritual rewards are possible if this job (bringing the word of G-d to the world, especially through one's actions) is done well, and greater penalties accrue if it isn't.

It is truly more of a burden than a title of honor - that is what most people don't understand.

Hope I’m not seen as yet another enemy of the Chosen and their Chosen-ness for pointing out that American Jews, a small portion of the population, almost always join several other small, easily-identifiable portions of the American electorate in voting overwhelmingly for the Democrat’s presidential candidate. Jews do their part. Democrats can count on the Jewish vote.

They were the ones spoken to and given the burden of teaching the rest of us. Anyone who has a problem with their “chosenness” is a rebelling pagan, IMO.

You are certainly not an enemy of the Chosen for pointing this out.

That my idiot co-religionists voted 78% for Barry the Empty Suit is a blot on my people.

Oh, BTW, most of those who did so are not very observant Jews, whereas most of those who voted for McCain were some variation of Orthodox. No, not all on either side, yada, yada. But on the whole, those who even care about the religion tend to be more politically conservative (and, if I might take liberties, more intelligent :>) ).

This is the Jewish belief and it has been this way since the beginning. I respect them for their beliefs, although mine are some what different, it doesn’t make any difference. As for their politics, they are no different than the rest of us. We each have our views and we can disagree, but not on their beliefs concerning God.

Being chosen isn’t always a good thing - ask a lobster on his way to the kitchen.

Amen. Fortunately I read your well-written words before giving my similar answer - that God chose "some" of the Jews to tell the world of the one and only God, what He expects of us and how He wants to bless us.

He has also said that "those who bless Israel, I will bless and those who curse Israel, I will curse."

Under the second Covenant Jesus also loves the Jew and desires to have them acknowledge Him as the rightful Messiah. Many do but unfortunately most not only do not but they resent their brothers and sisters who do.

I will have to go back and find it, but Charles Murray did a symposium on intelligence and the Jews at the American Enterprise Institute. IIRC, one theory he had was that when the Jews were taken into slavery, the Egyptians only took the best and brightest and slaughtered the rest.

It is truly more of a burden than a title of honor - that is what most people don't understand.

Anti-Semitism is not unlike kneejerk Anti-Americanism.

President Ronald Reagan was fond of stating that America is a "shining city on a hill" for the world to admire and emulate.

Sadly, too many of our young people today are not only unaware of the great story of America --they are lacking an understanding of why this country is so special and why we must fight hard to protect it.

It's not hard to imagine why other people, who don't know American History, hate America. They would be abnormal if they were not jealous. What other countries did the right thing with individual liberty?
