Sen. Nanny? [Fran] Drescher Wants to Replace Clinton in N.Y.

Actress Fran Drescher of "The Nanny" fame is interested in running to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) from the state of New York, the comedienne said this weekend.

Drescher, appointed a public health envoy for the State Department, said her work in that role and as an anti-cancer activist qualifies her to run.

“I’ve been very successful in getting a bill passed in Washington,” she told New York Magazine. “I was thinking I’d take the next four years to lay some groundwork, but I’m throwing my hat in the ring.”

The actress said in 2007 that she would like to get involved in politics. "If I had my druthers, I'd rather be a senator," she told the New York Daily News. "But that doesn't mean that's necessarily where I'd start."

“I’m an authentic and honest person,” she said this weekend. “And I think Capitol Hill needs more of that.”

New York Gov. David Paterson (D) will have to choose a replacement for Clinton pending her confirmation to become Secretary of State. A number of names, including JFK daughter Caroline Kennedy, are thought to be in the running to replace Clinton.
