The animated Fox show "Family Guy" is known for pushing the political envelope, but what was up with last night's catch phrase, "Laura Bush killed a guy"?
Loyal fans love the show for its politically incorrect humor -- it thrives on the "They did NOT just say that" variety of comedy.
But Sunday night's episode left some viewers scratching their heads.
Lead cartoon characters Peter and Lois Griffin repeated the phrase "Laura Bush killed a guy" several times throughout the show with Peter was dressed as Mrs. Bush and Lois as a bleeding man crisscrossed with tire tracks for a costume party.
So where did they come up with that one?
Well, according to public police records, First Lady Laura Bush -- then Laura Welch -- was involved in a fatal car crash in Texas in 1963.
The report says 17-year-old Laura Welch ran a stop sign and was involved in a crash that killed a friend of hers in another car, the Associated Press reported.
"It was a very tragic accident that deeply affected the families and was very painful for all involved, including the community at large," said Mrs. Bush's spokesman, Andrew Malcolm told the Associated Press in 2000.
''To this day, Mrs. Bush remains unable to talk about it,'' he said.
The crash was reported on during President George W. Bush's first run for the White House in 2000. According to the report, Mrs. Bush struck a sedan driven by 17-year-old Michael Douglas.
Rumors have swirled since the crash was first reported that Mrs. Bush may have been criminally negligent (i.e. that she may have been drinking) at the time of the crash, but no chargers were filed and no evidence of wrong-doing was recorded.
"Family Guy," created by Seth McFarlane, first went on the air in 1999. The show's leading dysfunctional family - the Griffins - live in a small Rhode Island town and among the celebrity voices behind the animated faces are Seth Green ("Austin Powers") and Mila Kunis ("That '70s Show"). The show has won three Emmy awards.
Laura Bush is certainly not the first political figure to be skewered by the show -- recent plots linked Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin to Nazis. It has mocked slavery, the disabled, the women's movement, obesity and pretty much any other sensitive or controversial issue you could possibly think of.
Will it show President-elect Barack Obama the same (dis)respect? We'll see.
They have also lambasted Reagan with Ronald Reagan trying to punch down a McDonalds wall saying "Gorbechev, tear down this wall. Reagan Smash" and then later, while laying on the sidewalk "Reagan sleepy". The only left wing politician made fun of is Clinton and that was regarding his love for the women.
This is why I don't get along with the vast majority of fools in my generation.
I wonder if Seth ever heard of Ted Kennedy?
Wake me up when these scumbags take on the Obamessiah, Hair Plugs Biden, and all the rest of the Demagogues.
Please. McFarlane and his one-trick-pony posse only attack the right politically. They're leftwing hacks.
I look forward to the political incorrect Obama bashing... *snicker* LOL! Ha. Of course NOT.
Family Guy ceased to be funny years ago.
Will it show President-elect Barack Obama the same (dis)respect? We’ll see.
NO ONE mocks the messiah..period..the chances of that happening are somewhat less than me winning the lottery or having a supermodel knock on my door and taking complete and total advantage of me (not that I wouldn’t be a willing participant..:)
IMHO
And like the one clip where Lois and Stewie are in their “final showdown”, and Lois machine-guns GWB’s portrait.
Nope, no bias here.
The show in question is actually an older episode by maybe...4 or 5 weeks. I find it funny that they only mention this NOW.
One trick ponies still trying to live out their Lenny Bruce fantasies. “Pushing the limits” was funny in the hypocritical society of the 1950s. Today it is just a depravity contest.
You nailed it. They’re fearless “no limits” champions of free speech, but will never show the Danish Mohammed cartoons or call someone a “nappy-headed ho.”
There where two funny episodes of Family Guy- Blue Harvest and the y2k episode. The rest is poorly written c***. There’s no effort on behalf of the writers to try and weave jokes into the story, jokes simply pop in and out wherever they seem to fit. In that regard, it’s not even comparable to shows like South Park and The Simpsons, which take a more substantive approach to their humor and satire.
Thou Shalt not Mock the One (piss be upon him).
To Rehab with you, where is a place reserved for thee among the demons of The Right.
Heck, Barack Obama raised a million dollars for Raila Odinga and visited him in Kenya...after which he killed a thousand people and burned 800 Christian churches...where was AP on that? They seemed to know a lot about an extra pull out bed used for children for a Palin business trip, but supporting an Islamic fundamentalist is not news...
I wonder if they will have a parody of Larry Sinclair, just to kid around...
The Left has no boundaries or limits to it deceit and hatred of America.
Was she drunk and leave the scene? Was the victim left to die while she slept it off before reporting it?
Poor taste. There are survivors of accidents like these who will not find this funny at all.
This was a repeat of an episode in September. This isn’t exactly timely.
And, they make a joke about the fact that Laura Bush killed a guy, but almost no one knows about it, both of which are true. They think it’s odd that something so fascinating about the First Lady hasn’t gotten any coverage the way all the other similar details about other celebrities do, which is something acceptable to take note of in a comedy show.
This isn’t at all like the McCain-Palin Nazi button. That was cheap humor.
I agree. But she living a full life unlike her old boyfriend.
