I hate to say this..... And yet... you do anyway. Seems pretty obvious that he stayed with the plane until the last possible moment. Once it isn't flying anymore there's no purpose in making the pilot die in the crash.

He stayed with it as long as he could to minimize impact, sounds like the engine went south on him,, not sure how much fuel he had onboard

Exactly. You can bet this pilot's going to get the debriefing of a lifetime. Knowledge may be gained to help other pilots avoid such occurances in the future.
If the plane's no longer controllable, why take that information to the grave?
