Once it isn't flying anymore there's no purpose in making the pilot die in the crash.

Exactly. You can bet this pilot's going to get the debriefing of a lifetime. Knowledge may be gained to help other pilots avoid such occurances in the future.

If the plane's no longer controllable, why take that information to the grave?

Even if it isn't pilot error....this has to be their worse nightmare of things going wrong.
