Terrible. It appears that they’re all from the same family. What a tragedy.

Now reporting 3 dead, one unaccounted for.

Terrible...But this had the potential for being substantially worse in regards to loss of life.

My daughter’s on that ship. I just emailed her the article. I’ll let you all know if she says anything I can share. Most of the time she lets me know the points in the press that are inaccurate. Prayers for the families involved, the pilot and the air wing crew.

Best-ever Jet Plane song is “Early Morning Rain” for those of us who remember when a 707 was a “Big 707”.

They can’t close the base thankgoodness as with the carriers here ,they are the airwings for them.

Squadrons which comprise a CVW are dispersed among many bases in many different states. There are only three Marine F/A-18 squadrons; two stationed at Miramar, that are augmented to the 11 CVWs, so your reasoning for keeping Miramar open is incorrect.

Why can't they put the base on Pendleton?

"Out on runway number 9 . . big 707's set to go . . in about three hours time . . she'll be passing over home (?) while I'm stuck here on the ground
with a dollar in my hand and my pockets full of sand"

Gordon Lightfoot ca. 1968

Oh geez.... I remember the lyrics.... and can “almost” hear the tune. Now you’ve done it. I’ll have to find a website that has the music....or it will drive me nutz. *chuckle*

Know them by heart both Lightfoot and PP&M sang it. I just played it on the old six string. It was like the song Man of Constant Sorrow. Several different versions of it but PP&M had the best one most people don't remember. If you can't fint the lyrics to In the Early Morning Rain under Lightfoot then look under Peter, Paul, and Mary.

I don’t think there is room to enlarge the runway at Pendleton, besides all the south orange cty libs would scream bloody murder about the noise..

Miramar has many differernt groups, jets and choppers.
Not only assigned to carriers but to the many Amphibious Warfare Ships, Tarawa Class ships and others.

The training and interdependency of the Marines and Navy
is vast.
The largest concentration of military in the world
here in San Diego depends on the immediate and readiness
of both land, sea and air.

It is far safer living near the bases than being in a car on the streets with drunk drivers.

A shame, what a random and terrible thing to happen to a family. I can only imagine how the pilot feels.

I’m well aware of what is stationed at Miramar and what squadrons are and are not augmented to CVWs, the UDP and various MEU ACEs. Also, having been stationed at several different bases in the San Diego area, I’m also well aware of the military presence in that part of CONUS.
