Alice King, former (NM) first lady, dies at 78

Alice King, the former first lady of New Mexico and mother of state Attorney General Gary King, died Sunday at age 78.

Attorney General King said his mother died after suffering a stroke a few days ago. He said she was surrounded by family, including her husband, former three-term governor Bruce King.

During her time as first lady, Alice King was an advocate for families. She headed the effort to create the Children, Youth and Families Department. She also focused her energies on early childhood development and drug-abuse prevention programs.

As recently as this year, the former first lady had a hand in politics. She spoke at a rally in New Mexico in support of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Alice King was raised on a dairy farm near Moriarty. After leaving Santa Fe, she lived with her husband on their ranch in Stanley, New Mexico.

Very sorry to hear this -- Bruce King was a Democrat of the old school and his wife a very, very gracious lady who worked hard as an advocate for children. Unlike her husband who could mangle words worse than George Bush, I remember her as an elegant speaker and companion to the governor unlike our current governor whose wife stays out of the limelight. I had the honor one night of being invited to dinner at the mansion with them in the company of an out of state delegation dealing with drinking water issues. Unfortunately, that afternoon I came down with the flu and had a temperature of at least 102. But I wasn't about to miss the opportunity but it all isn't too clear what went on!

I admit I’ve not heard of her, If she stood up for anything she can be proud of, well then we can certainly give both a moment of silence and solace. I hope she gets to go where she belongs.
It’s very hard to talk about those that go before us, We as Conserves do not, in any way play partizen when it comes to the passing of nice folk. whether they belong to “this or that” party. If she was cool enough, and did’nt do nothing goofy, I say God ‘forgiver her transgressioins’ if she even ever made any. GB her survivors.

I dealt with Gov. King frequently when a (conservative) newspaper man in southwest NM, and I really liked him as well as his gracious wife. May she rest in peace.
A couple of Kingisms (paraphrased)I recall: When commenting on a thorny issue, “Well, that opens a whole new box of Pandoras.” And, apologizing for a comment that offended feminists, “Gosh, I didn’t mean anything gender by it.”
