Obama defends Republic Windows and Doors workers

President-elect Barack Obama put himself on the side of the workers at the Republic Windows and Doors factory Sunday:

“When it comes to the situation here in Chicago with the workers who are asking for their benefits and payments they have earned, I think they are absolutely right,” Obama said Sunday at a news conference announcing his new Veterans Affairs director. “What’s happening to them is reflective of what’s happening across this economy.

“When you have a financial system that is shaky, credit contracts. Businesses large and small start cutting back on their plants and equipment and their workforces. That’s why it’s so important for us to maintain a strong financial system. But it’s also important for us to make sure that the plans and programs that we design aren’t just targeted at maintaining the solvency of banks, but they are designed to get money out the doors and to help people on Main Street. So, number one, I think that these workers, if they have earned their benefits and their pay, then these companies need to follow through on those commitments.

If the company is solvent, then workers should get what they are owed, but they are not entitled to severance pay unless that is in their contract. If the company is bankrupt, the workers and other creditors are not going to get everything they were owed. I suspect that Obama is going to be demagogue in this incident. Bank of America should not lend money to a company that can't repay it.

More pandering to the unions and their ilk. This fool is already exposing his pathetic politics and his total grasp of the Presidency. This country is at MAJOR RISK, in more ways that one, because of this pathetic election.

Chicago has a sales tax rate of 10.5%! Talk about abusing black people and others who have to live in the city. This guy abuses blacks in a city where murder is rampant and his slumlord cronies make millions off the govt with housing money as blacks and poor people are forced to live in tenaments. Yet the fools votes for this Rat.

How can a company survive where taxes are out of control. Obama is a Indonesia fraud who was born in Kenya.

If the company is solvent, then workers should get what they are owed, but they are not entitled to severance pay unless that is in their contract.

That's not exactly correct. Under the WARN Act (and the Illinois equivalent), workers are entitled to 60 days notice of a plant closing. If an employer fails to give the required 60 day notice, employees are entitled to back pay for the 60 day notice period.

In this case, it looks like the plant closed without 60 days notice. The workers were, under Federal and State law, entitled to such notice, and, as such, are entitled to some form of severance here.

Wonderful.

Did the company declare bankruptcy? If so, employees are unsecured creditors and will get pennies (if anything) on the dollar.

Well, if the company does not have any money, it doesn’t matter if they gave 60 days notice or not. Maybe the banks yanked their credit lines so there is no money to keep the plant open. The employees and the feds can sue the company all they want but if their isn't any money too bad. Maybe the chosen one can ask congress to run off a couple of million from the printing presses while they are printing the Auto companies money to pay the workers.....

Typical MArxist hypocrite. He talks about value of workers while turning them into Union nomenklatura beneficiaries... that is, until they go as slaves on his new government plantation to help pay China off, aka “stimulus package”.

I'm not saying they're actually going to get anything. Just that it is incorrect to say that they are not entitled to anything if it's not in their contract. There are obligations that arise out of law that do not depend on the union contract.

Also, there is some caselaw suggesting that WARN Act claims are given "administrative priority" in certain cases, in which case they would likely receive much more than pennies on the dollar.

Let him give them what’s owed them from his extra $30,000,000.

He had money for fake tattoos and assorted other crappola, why not spread his wealth around.

Aren't they trespassing?

Isn't the presumptive one condoning the illegal occupation of private property?

Looks like a staged communist “workers revolt” to justify union “card check” and other socialism thug legislation.

Obama should put his 30 million leftover campaign dollars into reopening this factory.

Who cares if it makes money or not? This is “redistribution” at work. :)

Obama is the Perfect Politician to explain why the financial system and economy is collapsing...

He, along with ACORN, and the BLACK Congressional Caucus with the FULL support of the Democrats in Congress STARTED it all by demanding Congressional pressure on banks to lend money to folks UNWORTHY and INCAPABLE of repaying the loans...

They called it “sub-prime” loans......but it was much more than that.

It was all simply a scam to pay “reparations” in the form of gifts delivered as “loans” to the undeserving.

Geraldo showed them picketing; they were chanting “Si se Puede” and other Spanish slogans. Wonder how many illegals were among them?
