Oakland mayor touts 'unprecedented' renewal plan, but he's light on details

OAKLAND — Mayor Ron Dellums told hundreds of business leaders at the Oakland Marriott on Friday that city and state officials are on the verge of an "unprecedented" effort to work together to revitalize 470 city blocks across Oakland.

His remarks were offered at the San Francisco Business Times' "Building Oakland" breakfast, and came one day after high-ranking city and state officials met in Oakland to discuss the project, called the California Urban Communities Collaborative.

The effort will focus on four separate areas of Oakland, but Dellums offered little information on how it will work. He said more details will be available when he and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger publicly unveil the program, possibly in January.

Still, Dellums wasn't shy about trumpeting what he thinks it will mean for Oakland.

"This is unprecedented action," Dellums said. "I don't want to get into the specifics of it at this point, because at the point where the governor and I come public, we'll do that. I can say to you that we're already working with each other. And we've already done a tremendous amount of work."

The city should buy up foreclosed and abandoned properties, and fix them up. Oakland couls become a reasonably priced bedroom community for San Fransisco.

Instead of a gun buyback, he is going to offer free upgrades to the citizens...

a revolver turned in will get you a new semi-auto.

a .410 shotgun will get you a Streetsweeper and a year of ammunition.

a hunting rifle will be upgraded to a fully auto AK74

As much as it pains me to compliment him, Jerry Brown was much more effective than Dellums.

Which, come to think of it, doesn’t really say much.

If you want to bring back Oakland, the first thing you’ll have to do is incarcerate “the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Where has a city government organized a self sustaining area that was not dependent of outside subsidies? I think successful areas happened in spite of government regulations and zoning. Are there any real success stories out there?

The only way to renew Oakland is to carpet bomb the city, salt the land and scatter the population

yeah, when you want to clean up an inner city problem you always call a guys whose nickname is ‘Red’. No better way to solve crime than to throw more socialism at it.

Sounds like Dellums really has it all together. This should work out at least as well as the San Francisco Free Shopping Cart Initiative, Vallejo’s police expansion plan and the Bay Bridge expansion/repair/reinforcement project, all rolled into one.

The taxpayers have all moved out, businesses are closed and criminals run the streets. Yep. Sounds like good things on the way!

Good old “Urban Renewal.” I was a teenager in the late 60s, but I remember it well in St. Louis and other cities (Pruitt Igoe built in the 50s). The whole program really worked wonders for the underclass and minorities, didn’t it?
