US President-elect Barack Obama said today he was prepared to offer Iran economic incentives to stop its nuclear program, but he also warned that sanctions could be toughened if it refused.
"We are willing to talk to them directly and give them a clear choice and ultimately let them make a determination in terms of whether they want to do this the hard way or the easy way," Mr Obama told NBC's Meet the Press program.
Dealing with Iran's uranium enrichment program, which some Western countries say is being used to develop a nuclear bomb, will be one of the first foreign policy tests for Mr Obama after he takes office on Jan. 20.
Iran last month signaled it was expanding its nuclear enrichment program, a clear sign that it has no intention of bowing to Western pressure. Tehran says the program is purely for peaceful purposes to generate more electricity.
Iran said last week it did not believe US policy would change under Mr Obama. Washington, which cut ties with Tehran after the 1979 revolution that ousted the U.S.-backed shah, has been pushing hard to isolate Iran over its nuclear program.

This guy is going to get us hit very hard by our enemies...very hard.
oooooh, tougher sanctions, WOW, Obambi sounds just as tough and determined as any Swedish socialist. I’m sure that the Mullahs realize the game has changed and now they will live in fear for their lives. /s
We are so FUBAR
OK libs, you voted this “Carter in a Marxist’s clothing” into our White House -— YOU deal with it.
This Obama is one ferocious negotiator. Tougher sanctions, that really really hurts. Ouch.
I bet he'll also draft a really forceful statement, and get some EU diplomats to endorse it.
The mullahs are quaking in fear and dismay.
The only thing worse than a fool is a damn fool.
If you listen carefully, and the wind is right, you can hear laughter from Tehran.
Carter’s second term on foreign policy commences.
Sounds like similar terms...
This limp-wristed milquetoast will pee in his pants if Iran so much as says Boo!
Agreed
His community organizer skills are coming in handy already!
I wonder what US territory the chosen one will give away to show his disdain for US imperialism.
he was prepared to offer Iran economic incentives
My sentiments exactly.
Carter is back.
Hey O,
Be very careful when you hold that carrot. Iran may just take a huge bite: like up to your neck. CHOMP.
Economic incentives?
Why not give them some tritium while we’re at it?
