Bishops of Los Angeles issue letter reassuring gays in the wake of Prop. 8

The bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, led by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, issued a letter to homosexual Catholics on Friday seeking to ensure them that the Church’s support for Proposition 8 was not meant to diminish their dignity or their membership in the Church. The true aim of the Church’s support, the bishops write, was to “preserve the ordered relationship between man and woman created by God.”

The pastoral letter, which was printed in the archdiocesan paper The Tidings, is written to all homosexual members of the Church as well as the rest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. According to the bishops, its purpose is to offer reassurance to gays amidst the fallout surrounding Prop. 8’s success that they are “cherished members of the Catholic Church, and that we value you as equal and active members of the Body of Christ.”

The letter then states the reason that the Church supported Prop. 8 was to “resist a legal redefinition of marriage.” “Our support for Proposition 8,” the bishops say, “was in defense of the longstanding institution of marriage understood as the life-long relationship of a man and a woman ordered to the good of the spouses and to the procreation and education of their children.”

But the bishops also state that they are “disappointed that the ballot information about Proposition 8 stated that the purpose of the initiative was ‘to ban gay marriage’" and that “from the very beginning, this was not our purpose.”

Citing the U.N.’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the sacred writings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the Los Angeles bishops then make their case for marriage as being universally understood to be between one man and one woman.

CA clergy trying to make nice with the gay gestapo. They’ll have more luck with asking Al Queda to cease terrorist attacks.

if this were a movie I'd walk out.

I read also that the Vatican is issuing statements about "global financial market transparency." I see that they do not speak for the Holy Father, but don't mind co-opting his remarks a bit to push some other agenda.

How long before Mahoney is forced to turn in his resignation? He'll be 75 when? The Vatican is going to accept it so fast, his head's going to spin.

What a mess.

The orientation is one thing - the conduct is another. Where is the condemnation for their conduct? It is against nature and intrinsically sinful.

We Catholics still want you to know we love you and want you to continue contributing to the church.

And every month like clockwork, my parish on Sunset asks for an increase in church donations..which eventually pay for the L.A. achdiocese sex abuse scandals that occurred with their priests with Mahoney in charge.
God is just waiting for these people to croak so he could kick them down to hell.

Jesus chased the moneychangers from the Temple with a scourge. Of course, some of the homosexual activists may pay money for such a thing. (We probably don’t want to give the church people any ideas.)

If only the good Cardinal had mentioned that the Church teaches that sexual relations belong exclusively in the marriage of one man to one woman. Cause to me it sure sounds as if he is giving a nod and a wink to homosexual partnerships as long as they are not called marriage.

But this is Mahoney and any resemblence to a backbone down the middle of his back is just a trick of the light.

Pope it is time to call the bishops to Rome from the left coast and read them the riot act. Either shape up and preach church doctrine or retire NOW.

>>”cherished members of the Catholic Church”

No - repentant sinners are cherished members - those who refuse to repent and are actively homosexual are not cherished members..

Just Mahony. Move on. We are praying that when he retires, Pope Benedict will put a REAL Catholic bishop in LA.

If this jerk Mahony had done his job gay church members would not have to have Catholic Church support of prop 8 explained to them.

According to the bishops, its purpose is to offer reassurance to gays amidst the fallout surrounding Prop. 8’s success that they are “cherished members of the Catholic Church, and that we value you as equal and active members of the Body of Christ.”

How many times during the past 40 years have Catholics devoted to the traditional liturgy been the recipient of "pastoral letters" from Mahony or his fellow travelers assuring them that they were "cherished members of the Catholic Church"?

Never.

Instead it was "this is they way things are now... get with the modern program..if you don't like it, tough!!"

Did Mahony ever send a letter to Mother Angelica assuring her that she was a "cherished member of the Catholic Church"??

Course not.

Yet he bends over backwards to ingratiate himself with a group which is openly hostile to orthodox Catholic teaching and which will accept nothing less than the full recognition of homosexual "marriage". The end result of this will be that nobody will be helped. The gays will not be placated one iota and at the same time Mahony has further alienated faithful Catholics. Nobody who flaunts their homosexuality, self-identifies as "gay" or agitates for gay "marriage" is an "active member of the Body of Christ" to use Mahony's term. Rather, such a person is a wound on the Body of Christ.

Why this extraordinary sensitivity toward the gay community? Is it merely political correctness run wild or is Mahony himself a little light in the loafers?
