President-elect Barack Obama committed Saturday to the largest public works building program since the creation of the interstate highway system a half century ago as he seeks to put together a plan to resuscitate the reeling economy.
We need action and action now, he said in an address taped for broadcast Saturday morning on radio and YouTube.
The address followed the latest grim economic report indicating the country lost 533,000 jobs in November alone, bringing the total job loss over the past year to nearly 2 million. Although Mr. Obama remains weeks away from taking office, the report ratcheted up the pressure on him to assert leadership during the interregnum before his inauguration.
Mr. Obama and his team are working with Congressional leaders to fashion a spending package that could invest hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy. A big part of that would be infrastructure projects such as building or repairing roads, bridges, schools, sewer systems and other public utilities. Democrats hope the new Congress that takes office in early January could pass such a measure in time for Mr. Obama to sign almost instantly after taking office Jan. 20.

WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!! I new “New Deal”
“Where is the money coming from?” The question that no one asks.
More money down the drain....and the creation of another inefficient work force.
Create as many permanent union gov. dem employees as possible, financed by republican small business owners. How about a non-unionized jobs program to build nukes, coal plants, and the fence?
Where is the money coming from? From the REAL workers and savers....
Do you think he knows that the major part of this work force is illegals hired by dishonest contractor.
We are spending more than we have ever spent before, and it does not work. We have never made good on our promises . . . I say after eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started . . . And an enormous debt to boot!Save a lot of time, wasted money and grief for the nation ... Next!
Two points about the socialist FDR, first he raised the marginal income tax rate from 25% to 94%, as well as any other tax he could find. Two the unemployment rate was higher at the of his eight years end than it was at the beginning.
The FDR socialist new deal did nothing for America, it was all about a command and control economy, which proved a spectacular failure. Everything old and broken is now shiney new again -- And make work government jobs awalys end in the same place, the unemployment line.
Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Is that a fig tree... Adam and Eve were after all in a ‘fig’ grove.
Only someone who has given themselves over to a strong delusion...and they have in so many areas, particularly abortion and homosexuality...would think that using tax monies to create jobs is an "investment".
Gov. and medicine is the only thing that grew last month. We’re paying to send his daughters to private school while he gives us jobs as a construction worker.
No, not murderers, rapists, thieves and drug dealers.
More like 'dissers of DUH 1'.
How does it stimulate the economy when you take money from one taxpayer and give it to another? It’s just spreading the wealth. We need the creation of wealth to grow ourselves out of this mess, not the spreading of wealth.
Tax cuts for producers would do WAY more to stimulate the economy.
Bama and company have the majority of people on their side and they will continue to believe that evil rich Ken Lay of ENRON Republicans are the cause of our economic woes.
And getting President Bush to bail out the liberals rich bankers is going to get neck-laced about President Bush more so than them accusing him of removing Saddam to get his oil.
