Triggerism, Trutherism, and Birtherism (More hot air from Hot Air)
Hot Air ^ | 12/5/08 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 12/05/2008 8:45:16 AM PST by pissant

Michelle takes a close look at the conspiracy-theory impulse on the Left, Right, and fringe today in her syndicated column. Whether one thinks that Sarah Palin has to prove her maternity of Trig or that Barack Obama has to produce a witness to his birth in Hawaii or that the 19 al-Qaeda terrorists actually flew commercial jetliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the real truth is that these conspiracy theories become belief systems based on conjecture and speculation rather than actual facts and evidence:

The plain truth will never mollify a Truther. There’s always a convoluted excuse – some inconsequential discrepancy to seize on, some photographic “evidence” to magnify into a blur of meaningless pixels – that will rationalize irrationality. Palin could produce Trig’s umbilical cord and it still wouldn’t be enough.

Alas, Trutherism thrives on both the left and right. Which brings us to the spate of lawsuits challenging President-elect Barack Obama’s U.S. citizenship. On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court considers one of those suits filed by New Jersey citizen Leo Donofrio, who maintains that Obama is not a “natural born citizen” because his father held British citizenship.

Great. Michelle Malkin and Cap'n Ed are equating Obama hiding his real birth certificate to Andrew Sullivan's theory that Trig may not be Palin's child and to the 9-11 truthers.

Good work, Hot Air. You just became irrelevant with the worst stretch of moral equivalence I've seen in years.

I don’t understand why proof isn’t required when you file to run for President. It’s in the Constitution.

I don’t think anything will come of this, but why is it so unreasonable to ask?

It is so insulting to see these conservatives so out of touch on this issue, parroting Axelrod talking points instead of reading up on the issue.

It isn’t unreasonable to ask. The media got into a lather about mccain’s birth, and he promptly released a vault copy of his BC.

Maybe, but everything I've seen says that if O'bama produced a real birth certificate, the issue would go away.

Why won't he do that?

Kos's word for it isn't worth much.

I think it is because it shows that Larry Sinclair is his brother and he is afraid of going to jail for incest!

Michelle Malkin and Cap’n Ed are pulling a McCain. Sucking up to the MSM isn’t going to get them a place at the table.

Never mind moral relevance. Any relevance at all!

Rational people know certain logical facts: a negative can not be proved. That's an axiom in basic logic. Hence, no one should need to "prove" that Hussein does not qualify to be president. The easier, and simple exercise would be to merely produce an official birth certificate and be done with it. Failure to do so is simple arrogance, indifference, criminal conspiracy, or the propensity for the rap culture to demand that rules don't apply to them. Take your pick.

Since the muslim mass murderers continue to kill hundreds worldwide daily, how the World Trade Center went down is irrelevant, if we want to survive.

Whether Palin gave birth to her grandaughter is even more absurd now, as it affects my life (and hundreds of million others) not in the least.

It takes monumental stupidity to make those comparisons, and "moral" has no role in it whatsoever.

They apparently have no ability to differentiate what is kookism and what is reasonable. It is kookism to think that the mossad or GWB planned 911 as an excuse to go after ME oil. It is kookism to see pictures of a pregnant Sarah Palin, have contemporaneous witnesses to a pregnant Palin and yet insist her daughter had the baby.

It is not kookism to analyze a COLB posted on the internet and demand a candidate for POTUS to prove his natural born birth status.

This moral equivalence is disturbing and idiotic.

I’ve been asking that question for weeks now. I had to provide a birth certificate for my drivers license and more recently my health insurance.

“..I believe Trig was born to Sarah Palin. I believe Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on U.S. soil. I believe fire can melt steel and that bin Laden’s jihadi crew – not Bush and Cheney – perpetrated mass murder on 9/11. What kind of kooky conspiracist does that make me?..”

"Which brings us to the spate of lawsuits challenging President-elect Barack "

This telling line at the end of the post is proof of the prime intention of the article. "Trig" and who the pilots were are just already-proven-false fillers to try to put the birth certificate controversy in the same category.

Whatever the left says about the B.C. situation, however vile they talk about those who are interested in this question of Constitutionality, we only need say one thing:

"Then...just show us the paper!

Exactly. Either there's something to hide, or Obama's just playing, "You can't make me, nyah nyah nyah." Neither option is reassuring.

I didn't expect anything from Hot Air, but I'm disappointed in Michelle Malkin.

I'm disappointed in Michelle Malkin.

It's bizarre, isn't it? Apparently she now thinks that the position of President of the United States should require less documentation than an illegal alien applying for welfare benefits.
