AUSTIN, Texas – In the last months of his administration, President Lyndon Johnson voiced worry over the Vietnam peace talks and stridently suggested that associates of Richard Nixon were attempting to keep South Vietnam away from the table until after the 1968 election, recordings of telephone conversations released Thursday show.

"This is treason," Johnson said, referring to people close to Nixon, during a conversation with Senate Republican leader Everett Dirksen.

“’This is treason,’ Johnson said, referring to people close to Nixon, during a conversation with Senate Republican leader Everett Dirksen.”

So why not invoke the Logan Act? Come on, it’s just waiting for you.

Plus, it was wartime, so Johnson could have offered a convincing argument for trying and hanging Nixon under martial law.

I'm sure Saigon was smart enough to figure that out all by their lonesome.

Maybe. It wasn't a declared war. Or maybe it was. One condition Eisenhower put on going in to Vietnam was that Congress declare war. No fool was Ike.

Yeah, I think he learned that you must get these %#&%$^& Congresscritters to commit to the war or they will turn on you. But I don't think he wanted to go in at all. We weren't going to take on the Soviets and the PRC so there was no purpose to turning the thing into a war.

Obama tried the same sort of thing with Iraq, and Bush didn’t whine.

Fighting with Congress probably just adds fuel to the fire. Appealing directly to the public may be the only hope.

Well maybe 40 years ago we will hear Audio footage of what Bush really thought.

Can we now compare Obama to Nixon? That will drive the left NUTS.
