'War on terror' -- an exercise in folly (Massive Barf)

The Mumbai metropolitan area is home to an estimated 19 million people, but it took just 10 men to shut the city down.

Last week's terrorist attacks involved a handful of men armed only with guns, grenades and homemade bombs. But they killed more than 170 people, closed universities and businesses, shut down India's National Stock Exchange and did incalculable economic damage to a country that boasts the world's third-largest military and internationally respected police and intelligence services -- none of which managed to prevent the attacks.

Sound familiar?

It should. It should remind you of 9/11, when 19 men armed only with box cutters ultimately killed nearly 3,000 people. And the 2004 Madrid train bombings, which killed 191, and the 2005 bombings on London's Underground, which killed 52. Each of these attacks involved a small number of perpetrators. Each was low-tech. Each caused enormous psychological and economic damage in addition to loss of life, and each occurred in countries with sophisticated security forces.

Get used to it.

“: Why would a terrorist bother to manufacture a nuke or “weaponize” a virus — a complicated, costly, risky and time-consuming process — when all he needs is a few determined people, some cheaply and easily obtained weapons or explosives, and boom? Even the most sophisticated society would be left paralyzed with fear.”

It’s only because they don’t have easy access to large destructive weapons that they have to resort low-tech weapons. What a moron.

How many terrorist attacks on US targets (including embassies and ships) were there between the 1993 WTC attack and the 2001 WTC attack?

How many successful attacks have there been on US targets since that time?

LAsshat.

I disagree.

The fanatics don't need WMD’s to shut down entire populations and create more Big Gov’t.

We will destroy our freedoms and liberty faster than any terrorist group could ever dream of.

The simple fact that terrorism is very rare and the odds are on our side. More Americans have been killed by illegal aliens.

The author is right. We should respond with more liberty and freedom. More CCP's etc.

Indeed. It would be very difficult for what happened in Mumbai to spiral as far out of control in, say, a medium sized town in the South. Too many armed citizens willing to use their arms, too many police officers willing to run far greater risks than India's police to stop the bad guys.

We’ll never ever stop street crime so why bother having cops.

“The folly of George Bush’s War on Terror?”

The fact we have exceeded 7 years without another terror attack on our soil completely contradicts that comment “get used to it.” Fight it hard and we don’t have to “get used to it.”

I can’t believe you would drag anything by Rosa Brooks into the forum. Worthless.

Typical chick journalist stuff....

Doesn’t understand warfare, doesn’t understand foreign relations, doesn’t understand Jihad and it’s implications.

But she can write English passably well so she is hired.

Dumber than a box of rocks.

It should remind you of 9/11, when 19 men armed only with box cutters ultimately killed nearly 3,000 people.

Armed only with box cutters, years of al Qaeda planning across 4 continents, millions of dollars in international terrorist financing, and an international terrorist support network.

This author doesn't really get it.

And by the way, how come there haven't been any terrorist attacks on US interests in the last 7 years, if not for the War on Terror.

Get used to it.

We don't have to "get used to it". We learn from our mistakes to be better prepared for the next time.

Nowadays who would stay in their seat when a guy with a rag and a boxcutter is up in the front of the cabin waving it around? Not many.

But, like most liberals, the writer, Rosa Brooks would rather we lie back and enjoy it rather than fight it.

It's folly to do otherwise, right Rosa?

Just off the top of my head I can count at least 9 times American interests overseas have been attacked since 911.

2002
June 14, Karachi, Pakistan: bomb exploded outside American consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, killing 12. Linked to al-Qaeda.

2003
May 12, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: suicide bombers killed 34, including 8 Americans, at housing compounds for Westerners. Al-Qaeda suspected.

2004
May 29–31, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: terrorists attack the offices of a Saudi oil company in Khobar, Saudi Arabia, take foreign oil workers hostage in a nearby residential compound, leaving 22 people dead including one American.

June 11–19, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: terrorists kidnap and execute Paul Johnson Jr., an American, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 2 other Americans and BBC cameraman killed by gun attacks.

Dec. 6, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: terrorists storm the U.S. consulate, killing 5 consulate employees. 4 terrorists were killed by Saudi security.

2005
Nov. 9, Amman, Jordan: Suicide bombers hit 3 American hotels, Radisson, Grand Hyatt, and Days Inn, in Amman, Jordan, killing 57. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility.

2006
Sept. 13, Damascus, Syria: an attack by four gunman on the American embassy was foiled.

2007
Jan. 12, Athens, Greece: the U.S. embassy was fired on by an anti-tank missile causing damage but no injuries.
