Brisbane Islamic college bans Australian national anthem

A BRISBANE Islamic school has banned the national anthem at assemblies and sacked the teacher who asked for it to be played, The Courier-Mail can reveal.

Australian International Islamic College teacher Pravin Chand was sacked in November, four months after his proposal for students to sing Advance Australia Fair was ruled to be against the "Islamic view and ethos".

A memo sent to teachers at the Durack school in July and obtained by The Courier-Mail, also said "the singing of the anthem will be put on hold".

Fair enough. Somebody needs to set a powerful PA system up outside this place and blast Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel at them 24/7 until they’re BEGGING to hear “Advance Australia Fair.”

One flaw. Noöne ever begs to hear “Advance Australia Fair” instead of Barnsey. Worst. National. Athemn. Ever. Me: "How did it win? Noöne I know voted for it."

My ranking

• 1. God Bless Australia (Jack O'Hagen): Simple, patriotic, magnificent music
• 2. Waltzing Matilda (Banjo Paterson) Great music (same as above actually), everybody knows the words and tune, It's Australia.
• 3. Advance Australia Fair (Peter Dodds McCormick - 1878 original) Words OK, a bit Anglo-centric. Pity about the tune
• 4. God Save the Queen (unknown c.1745) More than a bit Anglo-centric, but the music saves it
• 5. Song of Australia (Caroline J. Carleton/Carl Linger) Good Music, but the words are too "fruited mountains majesty"
• 6. Advance Australia Fair (some committee, 1980s) PC, nothing to recommend it (National Party Senator Sandy Macdonald said in 2001 that Advance Australia Fair is so boring that the nation risks singing itself to sleep)

Even so, the madrassa is way out of line.

Virtually all private schools in Australia receive government funding, and I am sure this one is no exception.

The previous Howard government made it a condition of funding that all schools fly the Australian flag, but set no requirement concerning the playing of the National Anthem. I doubt the Rudd government will have the guts to extend the requirement, but I’d be glad to be proven wrong.

The school I teach at plays Advance Australia Fair, God Save the Queen, and the school’s hymn at almost every assembly (Advance Australia Fair is always played, the other two may be omitted for short assemblies).

It does. In Islam the only “REAL” state is the Umma - the community of believers (in Islam). Everything else is false.
