WASHINGTON (Reuters) Food stamps, the main U.S. antihunger program which helps the needy buy food, set a record in September as more than 31.5 million Americans used the program -- up 17 percent from a year ago, according to government data.
The number of people using food stamps in September surpassed the previous peak of 29.85 million seen in November 2005 when victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma received emergency benefits, said Jean Daniel of the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service.
September's tally -- the latest month available -- was also boosted by hurricane and flood aid, Daniel said on Wednesday.
But anti-hunger groups said the economic downturn is the main reason behind the higher figures.

Also we would not even need all these stupid programs if we didn't have all these taxes and government regulations. Maine is 46th worst in America because we care more about lazy bums and black bears and trees and mud puddles than working class poor who want to work.
It was just back in the summer that we were told how underutilized food stamps are. Now it’s a calamity that they are.
That’s a classic problem for unemployment aid, because you run the risk of having people work at the stamp limit to also gain the stamps. The solution would probably be a degressive curve with incentives to work part time and try to find a real job. With many of the jobs some people can get, it’s the rational decision for them to not work and relys on support.
Too bad that in Maine we have no jobs. They’re all taxed over the border to those low tax right wing hell holes (so we are told by the left) like Texas and Nebraska.
i stood in line at grocery behind a fat mexican woman (who spoke no english)
amazed as she paid for her three separate piles of groceries with
wick coupons. then she and her fat little daughter toddled off to
get in their reasonably new honda odessy. i think huge numbers of
illegals are tapping into food stamps, etc. noone seems to care if they qualify.
The 700 billion dollar question - what is the definition of "needy"?
Most Mexicans get WIC benefits, at least according to my wife. My wife is a Mexican National here LEGALLY but they all assume that she is illegal so they are always telling her about how to save money and get benefits.
If America doesn't care about Constitutional qualifications for the presidency, why should it care about qualifications for food stamps?
In Hew Hampshire; they get free heating oil, as well.

Anyone wonder how 0bama got elected?
These social programs are a creeping disease that might eventually kill the host. It’s in critical condition right now.
Hew Hampshire = New Hampshire. Actually; I’ve taken to calling the state Red Hampshire. Lynch, Hodes, Shaheen, Che-Porter...leftists all.

Great comment.
& did she light a cigarette when she got in?
Exactly. What a surprise. Offer freebies with few oversights and more upsides and people grab it. Who would have thunk it?
This past summer I stood behind a woman in the grocery store wearing a security guard’s uniform—apparently, she was working to some extent.
Her cart piled high with groceries totaled a whopping $310, all but $5 of which she paid for with food stamps.
Yo, man, I want me summa dem food stamps fum da guh-mint.
Greetings from the low-tax hell hole of Texas!! Yeah, stay away, it’s hell down here, tell all the libtards that they are right, it’s terrible and they should not come here under any circumstances! (Do we really need a **/s** line??)
Go to the homes and you'll see cable TV, cell phones, liquor/beer and smokes.
