NINE MALL FALLS, Wash. - A Suncrest couple has removed their five school-age children from Lake Spokane Elementary School after a school official there reported the mother to Child Protective Services in mid-November.
In response, the Nine Mile School District - which borders northwest Spokane and Stevens County - is investigating the incident.
Dan and Maree Koolstra said the incident began on Nov. 17 when their two oldest children missed the bus.
The couple claims they have told their 8- and 10-year-old children that if they miss bus then they have to walk to school as punishment. They allege this is a form of punishment they have set in the past and have enforced from time-to-time.
On Nov. 17 the children missed the bus and were forced to walk the 1.4 miles to school.
...
Maree Koolstra said she followed the children along as she drove in her car to monitor their progress.

But was it uphill both ways?
“Couple investigated by CPS for making kids walk to school [1.4 mi]”
Horrifying!
(fat, lazy, stupid, American youth sarcasm)
amazing!
i grew up on a dairy farm,
and we liked walking to our one room school
because it was unsupervised time to ourselves.
whatta buncha wimps.
I used to walk that far to avoid riding the bus.
Don’t know which is sadder, that someone turned them in for this. Or her having to follow them.
Government gone wild. All hail the commissars.
My friend did the same thing.....she called the schools told them her kids would be late and the reason was because they missed the bus again and they were walking to school.....the people at school laughed and told her that will probably never miss the bus again and thanked her for the call.....
they never did miss the bus again...
Uphill both ways.
The horror of it.
I attended four schools. Didn’t have school buses and mom didn’t drive. We walked between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 miles each way....and as the story goes...in the snow....winters in Pittsburgh.
Never thought a thing about it! That’s probably why I’m so healthy and stayed thin.
I walked two miles to and from school for years! So bloody what. That’s not much of a punishment and to have that reported to social services? Unbelievable.
When I was in first grade I had to walk to and from school every day. It was around 2 miles. Never even thought about it being unusual.
Now that I think about it, I doubt if I would let mine walk to school any more. Just too many crazy people around.
I used to walk farther than that every day as a kid. That said there are more sickos of all types out there these days and the buses are probably a good idea.
What crud! Why, when I was a kid 1.4mi was 5mi! Uphill! Both ways!
Damn nannystaters.
Up hill both ways in the snow without shoes or overcoats.
In elementary school, I had a walk of 3/4 mile up the drive just to get to the bus stop. If I missed the bus, it was another 2 miles to school. In junior high, I would rather walk than ride the bus, but it was only about a mile to school. Of course, back in those days there was almost zero concern about abductions and predators.
